Would like to add an inexpensive telephoto lens that will use a 2x converter to my Canon XSi. Any suggestions?

This would be a waste of your money and you would probably not be happy with the results. Stay away from convertors. Save your money and purchase Canon lens.

The 2x convertors sometimes don't give the greatest quality with expensive lenses. I just bought 400mm "L" f5.6. It cost $1300, and with the convertor, you loose some sharpness and auto focus.
Save your money, buy an "L".

auto focus may not work in low light situations with this combination of lens & convertor.
