Hi, Just went through this with our daughter's two terriers.
Do you have a crate for each of them? How old are they?
How much freedom do they have? They should be confined to a crate, or one room until they are potty trained. They
need to be taken outside and walked around until they potty... then praise, praise, praise them and give them a tiny training treat when they come inside. Confine to a kitchen area, or somewhere they can't ruin furniture, rugs, etc. Do this every two or three hours until they are good every time. It doesn't take weeks, sometimes only 5 days or so, and they start to understand what is required of them. I have had lots of dogs over my life, and this process works. They can't have too much freedom until they can handle it! If you need any more info, let me know.

nice hemi.
I raced a mouse slingshot back in the day.

Ohh DOG thing. I used to take my pup out every hour or so until he ( St Bernard X Malamute Husky Mutt) got in the habit of using the outdoors.
Less than a week and no more accidents in the house.
Ofcourse he chewed my belt, boots, gloves and the cat.
But he got over that in time.

Sounds like you are doing what you need to! Keep at it, they'll get it... just don't give them a chance to ruin your furniture or rugs until they do. You'll all be happy soon. I have two Cairn terriers, and our daughter has two Cairn terriers. It is mass mayhem when we get together every weekend, but we wouldn't have it any other way! Having two dogs is a lot of fun, four dogs even more fun! You'll love it when this phase of training is completed! :-D :-D

The swatting and putting its' nose in the poop does nothing for the dog. It is just a puppy and dogs only have an average I.Q. of 12. It can not possibly correlate these actions. It simply does not understand.

It takes patience but here is what you do. Just as soon as your puppy is finished eating, take it outside to do its' thing; no matter what the weather. When you are between meals, take it outside for a few minutes. It will catch on. No treats necessary. It does mot happen over night. If it is a "Westy", you're screwed.

A lot of years ago I had a Chihuahua and trained it to go in the litter box. It would be outside and bark at the door and make a bee line for the litter box. Then want to go out again. He was a good dog, didn't have the attitude.

We got a nice young dog from the pound years ago. She was already potty trained, but one day we took all the kids to see a movie not far away. Unfortunately it was all sold out, so we had to go back home. We were gone only 20 minutes, but Suzie let us know she was displeased that we left her alone by chewing on the foot of a dresser.

You can read trainers advice online, it seems that the old methods of negative reinforcement are not so well advised anymore. One thing to keep in mind with negative reinforcement is that if used at all it has to be immediate as a dog often does not understand why he is being scolded. I have a new puppy that is not a problem, but the few times that he failed I really felt that it was my fault for not getting him outside enough. Dogs in nature live in dens, so it is natural for them to not go in their immediate living quarters, so you have a little bit of a head start.

I used positive reinforcement and frequent trips outside to get my new dog into the habit of going outdoors. He has had a few rare occasions to use the outside pool area which is enclosed, but I think that this is because he was 5 months old when I got him, kinda a rescue dog, and the previous owner must have left him on a patio for extended periods of time because accidents out there can easily be cleaned with a hose.

Make sure to purchase plenty of chew toys for your dogs or shoes, furniture, and other valuables will suffer as they go through the teething phase, and even afterwards, a young dog will chew, they seem to explore their world with their mouths.

I have a buddy who I played football with in high school who was also part of our state champion wrestling team and then wrestled at Indiana. He's an avid outdoorsman and raises Labs. At one point, they got together a number of the labs they'd raised for a photo. This guy could probably give a tip or two.
