A few shots taken in York this week. This is a unique city where it has been possible to excavate back down through the layers showing evidence of human habitation going back 6000 years. Pre-History up to about 71 AD the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Medieval, Tudors, Stuarts, Georgian, Victorian periods have all left evidence of their presence in the archiological record and the city's architecture.
The Shambles (No tilt/shift lens will straighten these buildings)
York Minster - Construction started in 1220 and took 200 years. Built of local sandstone that crumbles over time and requires constant maintenance.
York Minster Southwest facade. Three towers each 0ver 200 feet tall.
The Minster has it's own team of stonemasons
Example of the masonry work they produce

Very nice! And interesting! Limestone carving big in our area. My brother has two Bedlington Terriers he shows. I guess they originate up in your area. They are very cute.

Hello CardinalLady
Thank you for your kind comments. I was only visiting the area as I live way to the north in Scotland. Bedlington is in Northumberland just north of Yorkshire and that is indeed where that breed originates. Closely related to the Dandie Dinmont much loved by the author Sir Walter Scott who lived just over the Border.
