I own a Canon 7D with different lenses. I am going to Japan as a tourist and wonder about traveling lighter with a Canon SX50 which I would have to purchase. Is this a good compromise?

It sure beats carrying and swapping lenses, but it depends on your travel situation. Maybe that wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks. I'm sure more people will offer ideas. From traveling in the past, I know I liked to travel light. The trips were for fun and relaxation, not primarily photography.

If you decide on the SX50, don't rule out refurbs and ebay. It's worth considering, especially the refurb.

If you do decide on the sx50, (I have sx40, and love it) get it earlyas possible and learn to work with it, read manual, practice with it. You will be more satisfied with the results and come home with better trip pictures if you do. You will also be able to gauge how many batts to take with you, cards etc. there will be differences but should be worthwhile taking the sx50 instead of all that other gear. Bet you would enjoy the longer reach without all of the switching out.

Just returned from 2 weeks in Rome, Sicily and Portugal. My go to camera is a Canon 5DMkII with several Prime lenses, all L including Tels, way too heavy for my 83 yr neck. Bought a SX50 and a couple 32 gig cards, 3 batteries. Shot Raw & JPEG Fine, always had extra battery and had to change a couple times, never had to change card with 1723 shots. First couple days had some good, some not so good, but after got the hang of it, WOW, others on tour got the SX50 on return. I used the auto focus, and even through bus window got great landscape shots. Learn to take your time at first with focus. Most of all enjoy the trip.

At times, I did the same i.e. took my SX50 in lieu of 5DMkiii and accessories. I wasn't disappointed. This is not to say that SX50 is a full frame replacement but a compromise at times.

Since I bought the Canon SX-50, I don't think I've used my DSLR even once! The SX does everything I care to do and with much more ease. I can't promote it enough!

Neither. I didn't see any refurbs or good deals on eBay. I bought this one outright, but I saved 10% by using my Discover Card. I don't recall where I bought it, and I'm on the wrong computer to find out.

Personally I don't think you would be happy with the results comparing the 7D with the SX50. You don't mention the lens selection that you have. I use a 50D with the EFS18 to 200 lens and rarely change it. If you are convinced you need the SX50, I would still take the 7D with you and compare results.

I have a 6D and a 7D and just purchased the sx50..Much better than I thought it would be. Excellent for travel.....I am really pleasantly surprised.....You can buy one from Band H or Adorama and return if you don't like it.

I use it for macros and telephoto, as well s quite good video. Landscapes are tougher, and interior shots without flash very difficult. Portability and ease of use (No changing lenses) recommend it. In the right hands , you can get good pics. <$400 investment - you won't regret it !
