Hi Tim,
I think you are right about the timing and will move our departure one week. It may not be enough but that is what we can do for now.

Funny about the "Bear Jam" -- I have seen similar things before (get out of my way people :))

Really looking forward to those landscapes. Thanks for the advice and good wishes.

Post some pics when you get back. I always love seeing those views.

Hi,

You're a bit early in the year for the color change, but the park is beautiful any time of the year. Landscapes opporunities are everywhere there, many scenic view pull-offs along the drive. Wildlife could be anywhere along the drive. Deer being the most common. Last time I was there I did get to see two bears at different locations. When a bear is sighted is causes what I like to call a "Bear Jam". Cars parked all along the road.

As far as where to stay, you can stay right on the drive at either Skyland or Big Meadows. They have cabin/hotel types of lodgings as well as restaurants there. The food is a little pricey but good.

Take your time while you are there and enjoy that beautiful scenery. Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Tim

I stayed in the park at one of the locations (can't remember which). It might not matter to you, but where I stayed there were no tvs. They didn't even mention it, I found out when I got to the room. I spend very little time in the hotels while on vacation, so it's wasn't that big of a deal. What did bother me was urine on the toilet seat!!! The room was filthy, they had to send in someone to clean it again. There are one (maybe two) place(s) along Skyline Drive where you can exit the park. We either stay there, or at the town at the end of Skyline Dirve. Things are usually cheaper and there are more things to do.

The places in the park might be great, and our experience was just a fluke. However, it only takes once for me not to go back.

When you say there are only a few exits to the park you are quite correct. There are four, 1) Front Royal, the northern terminus, 2) Thornton Run gap at mile post 31, 3) Swift Run gap at mile post 65 and 4) Rock Fish gap, the southern terminus at milepost 105.

105 miles and only two cross roads. It is something to consider, but I find that to part of the beauty of the place.

I'm sorry your visit wasn't great. But I know that I'm going back.

During the two years I worked in Virginia, I drove many miles and took many photos along Skyline Drive in SNP. Having driven the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway, however, my honest recommendation would be for you to pass up Skyline Drive and spend your time along and near the southern end of the BRPwy. It's prettier, the pullouts don't offer similar views from all others, there is more visible wildlife, and there is more varied vegetation. Skyline Drive has no waterfalls that you can drive to - all of them require a hike downhill and a climb back to the highway. Down south, there is highway access to many of them. I can't predict what you want to see and/or photograph, but having seen the entire length of that highway, I highly recommend you drive farther south.
