Found a few to shoot in the garden. I believe this to be a male Red-footed Cannibalfly - Promachus rufipes as near as I could match the image on BugGuide. http://bugguide.net/node/view/34487 I shot several of him as he was a fascinating & ugly critter. The other one is a cousin of the grasshopper who got the bath the other day.

To show his actual size - close-ups follow

Excellent set, geezerga! Are the four closeups of the insect shot on macro or did you zoom in close?

Hi Jim. Thanks for the nice comment. I don't do macro at all .. no luck with trying to hold the camera steady enough. I zoom & use a monopod .. sometimes sitting down with it in my lap. The really tight ones are zoomed & then cropped. Originals are 4000x3000 .. crops are 2636x1977, 2785x1638, 2149x1425 & 1869x2404. The flowerpot one is cropped to 1881x2508 & the grasshopper to 2365x1608. Originals are stored if you want to d'load. The EXIF info is intact.

Thank you, Cotondog. I appreciate your comments. The SX50 is a good tool to have in the gadget bag. Knowing when & where to use it is the secret to good photos with it.

Geezer, those are fantastic. The fly thing looks fierce. I don't know if they bite humans but I watched one stab another bug twice it's size, hold it and wait for it to die before devouring it. You spent a lot more time with him than I would want to do!

Thanks for the info, I had made that assumption but was not sure. I do the same, I can't get close enough for macro, and even if I do the position I'm in causes me to shake worse. I really like the zoom feature on this camera, and get good shots using TV at high speeds, if I have ISO and EV correct. These closeups are superb examples of this camara's capabilities.
