So....what does any of this have to with photography ???
I'll give you a good one on Photography, and one of the reasons I DO go to Walmart.
I shoot Medium Format (120 film). All of the Walmarts in our geographic (Central Oregon), send medium format film to Fujifilm Labs direct for processing, If I put the film in a Fujifilm envelope and mark it for "Send Out Only". Advantages:
1) Pro processing in Fuji labs. Always good results
2) No shipping costs, the film travels no charge to me on Walmart trucks to and back from the lab.
3) Consistent 10 day turnaround
4) Low pricing ... 84 cents on 8 transparencies (I shoot 6X9) and usually $8 for 8 negs w/prints.
5) Haven't lost a roll in a decade since I discovered this process.
6) All bad shots have been my fault.
Now, I will say that hardly ever do the store employees know what I am talking about. I discovered this practice ten years ago and know how to do it all myself as far as instructions on the Fuji envelopes, sealing it and putting it in the Fuji drop slot. Currently, hardly any employee in the store knows what is happening with your film when it goes out, because it is never opened or resealed in house.... only when it gets to the lab. Over the last decade I have only talked to a couple of employees who even knew what Medium Format is, but those people don't last long because of turnover.
Not all Walmarts send out to Fujifilm Labs. In the MidWest some use Dwaynes, which was or is a highly qualified lab, so one needs to check.
I've done about 12 rolls with good results. Walmart ships to the lab, and consistently I get a telephone call from Walmart on the tenth business day on the return.
I do know this, although I don't do much shopping at Walmart. Last week I went in and at the entry to the grocery section, there were two identical carts of groceries. One from the Walmart shelves, and one from Fred Meyer, our other most shopped big box store. The carts contained the same brands and quantities of item.
The Freddy's cart was $152. The Walmart cart was $127.
I also know that most of the people I know who say nay to Walmart are considerably misinformed in many other areas of their lives.
The Walmart I now use is a 4 year old Super Walmart, and the other in the area is a conventional Walmart, recently remodeled to a larger size.
For those who don't know, Walmarts were a spinoff from Sam's Clubs, which are mostly Midwest, and very similar, but you never seem to hear the same grousing about Sam's Clubs?? true?
