Very cute little thing. Saw a TV documentary on chickens a few years back. They're not so dumb, and actually have excellent protective instincts for those chicks. A hawk flew over a farmer's yard. Hen and chicks went scurrying under a porch, except for a single wayward chick.
Mom, noticing a chick was missing, ran back out into the yard, feigned injury to lead the hawk away from the chick, until the chick made it safely to the porch. Mom jumped to her feet and ran for her life, also made it okay. The Hawk had to go to KFC for dinner.
But her selfless act surprised me. Hadn't credited chickens with self-sacrifice.
