Filters and step down rings

Hello all!

I have a technical(?) question concerning filters and step down rings.

My Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens is 77mm and the next lens I am considering is a Sigma 10-20 f3.5 with 82mm.

I shoot Landscapes and travel photography (along with the obligatory family pictures).

1) Do I buy the 82mm Hoya ND400 and a step down ring? Or two Hoya's. Any side effects with the step-down ring on the 17-50?

2) Do I really need to have a ND400 for the 10-20?

3) I have a 77mm CPL and I have heard that a) I do not need it on a 10-20 lens; is this true? Also, can both the CPL & ND x400 be stacked? Is the order relative?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help. I hope this is the right forum to post this query!

Stepping up to fit an 82mm filter on a 77mm lens is good. Stepping down to fit a 77mm filter on an 82mm lens will cause vignetting when used.

So, I should get an 82mm and ring to bring it down to 77. Or, the smc da 14mm f2.8 is 77mm filter! But I have heard that the SMC 12-24 F4 is also 77mm... but now too expensive.
The sigma 10-20 F3.5 is 82mm
I need to win the lottery!

Probably a good bet. I have a Tokina 12 - 24 and once stacked 2 filters on it and got a little vignetting. Then I pulled my head out of my a**.

If you do step down to fit a 77 on an 82, you can fix it with a little cropping. It may be workable until you can afford the bigger filter after winning PowerBall.

I use a nd for my 10--20 no problems at all n I never take it off as the nd adds contrast that the sigma lacks compared to the l series lenses.

Thanks, RocketScientist.
lumpski, what step is your ND? I think the ND x400 is a 9-2/3.

If you step up from a 77 to an 82 should not be a problem. It is my normal arrangement.Step down from an 82 to a 77,you will have a problem.

Agree completely. I use a 77mm CPL on both 77mm and 72mm lenses. No problems. Trying to use a 72mm filter on those same lenses would cause problems.

Ummm. Backwards. Using a filter that is LARGER than the front element of a lens is usually OK, which would be a step DOWN from 82 to 77. So unless you meant DOWN when you wrote UP, you have it backwards, no?

It can get really confusing, what with the UP, DOWN and all around nonsense. I always tend to look at it from the FILTER point of view. Using a 52 mm filter on a 77 mm lens is a step UP (but obviously not recommended...lol). Using an 82 mm filter on a 77 mm lens is a step DOWN.

Other people will probably find fault with my logic, because they read it the other way around in a book in 1953... But the way I look at it, you're fitting the FILTER to the LENS, not the other way around. So your perspective should be Filter ---> Lens. 82mm ---> 77mm is down.

Sigma makes an older 10-20mm lens and it has a 77mm filter thread. Here's the link:

It's also $220.00 less. I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tim
