I was Army 67-68 and LBJ would have tied his hands behind his back and issued a pea shooter to us. Maybe it is a Democrat thing.

Hey rook2c4, have you ever served in the military ?
I didn't see an answer to your question. Navy 57 - 61
Thank You Gen. Mattis for your service. Wish we had many more like you. There are many like rook2c4 who know nothing of the service and sacrifices our military personnel go through to provide the freedom we enjoy in our country today. I thank all who have served. (Retired MSgt, USAF)

Sometimes retreat (and yes, even surrender!) is the best option for either tactical or humane reasons. Based soley on his words, this fellow makes a poor commander because he apparently can't stop fighting regardless of circumstances. I would be very weary to serve under such a person in either a military or civil situation.
I don't know of a single combat veteran who would agree with this statement, regardless of their branch of service.

I think the inference the OP was making was if this guy was where LBJ was, as in Commander of the Armed Forces.

Gen. James Mattis / AP

Gen. James Mattis, known to his troops as Mad Dog Mattis, is retiring after 41 years of military service.
The Marine Corps Times is calling Mattis the most revered Marine in a generation.
Mattis has been commander of the United States Central Command since 2010 and led the 1st Marine Division into Iraq in 2003.
Mattis was an inspirational leader of men and his powerful words will go down in history.
Here are some of the best words that the Mad Dog has had to offer:
1. I dont lose any sleep at night over the potential for failure. I cannot even spell the word.
(San Diego Union Tribune)
AP
2. The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event. That said, there are some assholes in the world that just need to be shot.
(Business Insider)
3. I come in peace. I didnt bring artillery. But Im pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you fuck with me, Ill kill you all.
(San Diego Union Tribune)
4. Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until theyre so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.
(San Diego Union Tribune)

(San Diego Union Tribune)
8. You are part of the worlds most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.
(Mattis Letter To 1st Marine Division)
9. There are hunters and there are victims. By your discipline, cunning, obedience and alertness, you will decide if you are a hunter or a victim.
(Business Insider)
10. No war is over until the enemy says its over. We may think it over, we may declare it over, but in fact, the enemy gets a vote.
(Defense News
)
11. There is nothing better than getting shot at and missed. Its really great.
(San Diego Union Tribune)
12. You cannot allow any of your people to avoid the brutal facts. If they start living in a dream world, its going to be bad.
(San Diego Union Tribune)
13. You go into Afghanistan , you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didnt wear a veil. You know, guys like that aint got no manhood left anyway. So its a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually its quite fun to fight them, you know. Its a hell of a hoot. Its fun to shoot some people. Ill be right up there with you. I like brawling.

(Mattis Letter To 1st Marine Division)

A great run of leadership is ending.................. (
show quote)
In 1967, I wrote a letter to the editors of the New York Times that stated that the best way to bring a poor and uneducated agrarian society into the 20th century was through education and not through warfare. The French had already failed for 75 years to dominate the VIetnamese and failed. This war was not faught in a manner that was conducive to victory. It was done in a political turmoil and had been going on with American assistance since the early 50's.
To restrict combat pilots from shooting or destroying real targets was idiocy and self defeating.
I suggested that Vietnam would eventually convert to Capitolism when the mass public was better educated and the regime was brought down that was simply interested in self enrichment. My theory proved to be correct.
Our fear of Communism has proved to be just a paranoid reaction to any form of government that was not our form of democracy, but a democracy demands that the voting public be aware of the issues and smart enough to know what is propoganda and what is fact. All forms of Communism except for China have eventually failed and China is slowly changing to match the times.
I was in Vietnam for over 2 years during the war and saw first hand what our half hearted efforts produced.
Semper Fi.
General Mattis is the real McCoy. There is no substitution for winning a war. I wore the USAF uniform for 32 years. Tony

This part sounds a bit like an issue we might be having right here at home.

I doubt that you or rook2c4 would make it through a week of basic training. They weed out girly men pretty quickly, I dare say that there are a lot of women serving in the military today that have more balls than the two of you put together. You liberal pussies make me sick, you wrap yourselves in the freedoms these people bleed and die for, and you have no appreciation.

heyrob,
This statement in your comment, "You liberal pussies make me sick, you wrap yourselves in the freedoms these people bleed and die for, and you have no appreciation", sounds like it would make a great featured line in a military court martial scene in a movie.
We just need a script writer to come up with the rest of the story line. Perhaps a less than adequate marine being.... Oh, wait a minute. I think someone beat us to the punch.

Probably talk about Nam for several years, and Iraq, and ...Stan.
Repeated, ignorant failures.
I like someone who is positive and tough, but we lost those wars.
I think a sense of reality is a good thing in a general officer.
Life is complex, and killing isn't always the answer.
Every time you kill an innocent civilian (or one that Appears innocent) you make twenty enemies. Figure in a three Thousand Mile Supply Line, and estimate those odds.
Some (political) wars, you just can't win with violence and corruption.
Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush cost this nation plenty. Cheney should have gone to prison with Nixon; then we would have been spared this tragedy.

People are dying and Trillions are being wasted...and all you can do is call people names.
Surely you can do better...

You're right, I've called others for that and for the name calling thing I apologize, but the point remains. As to doing better, yes I could, but I'd be wasting my breath.

I understand how you feel. I was in the army during Nam. Many of the things that happened back then were politically motivated and there were lots of bad decisions by our civilian government. As a result I don't think the outcome would have been very different had this general been around then.
