We are lucky enough to have young (very noisy) red-tailed hawks around our house each summer. The other day, I noticed one flying across the back of our house. I grabbed the camera and went to the deck to see if I could spot him sitting in a tree. I didn't see him at first, but eventually he came flying right back towards me. I froze and watched as he landed on my old satellite dish about 15 feet away. (So THATS why I don't take down that dish?? :)
I slowly moved to get some shots. At first I could only see tail feathers, but worked my way around until I got some nice portraits.
Fantastic shots! I think he looks a little peeved that he can't find anything good to watch on TV.:)
Spectacular head shots! Focus and DOF are fantastic, enabling the viewer to closely study the beauty of this bird.

Thanks. Probably looking for "Hawk Dynasty".
You are an SX50 user too, right?? I think these were all taken on the automatic setting.

Yes but I've only had it a few weeks. Don't think I'll ever be able to do what you did!
Fantastic shots - was he re-tuning the TV for you? :D
I love how you presented these, teasing us with bits and pieces as you moved around. Felt just like I was with you! The talons close-up is great too.
I'm going to put a copy on my desktop of the one you "stored original" of to remind myself THIS is how a shot can look with SX50! I imagine your close proximity, ISO 125, and sunshine helped...but still - WOW.
I know some people who had to have hawks relocated from their property because when there were young ones, the humans couldn't leave the house without getting attacked! (and yes, it HURT)

Thanks for your great comments. This was the first year that we knew where the nest was located... about 400 yards from our house... across a pasture of a county park. The nest was actually in a pine tree next to one of the park's admin buildings. And yes, workers were "pushed" away by the parents a few times. The area is pretty much off-limits to the public. Nobody got hurt and it seems everybody was amused having these impressive neighbors. If they return next year, I might try getting some shots at the nest. Not TOO close, tho! :)
