I'm looking for an inexpensive (cheap?) way to show friends and family some of my photos. The analogy would be a cross between the old photo album and the (old?) Kodak slide show with carousel, projector and screen.

I don't think I need Internet connectivity, and I waver about sound and video. But I don't really have a way to share my photos easily, even with my wife. I just want to be able to whip out a gadget and scroll through a set of photos on a display that two people can easily share at the same time.

I don't have any of the i-gadgets, and don't really want one. Simpler is better, and inexpensive is good, also

What are the suggestions?

You could load some of your photos on to an external hard drive with a USB connection and plug it into your TV set. Or alternatively some modern TV's have card readers installed in them. just plug in your card and away you go.

I want to thank everyone for the very good suggestions.

I apologize for the delay in responding; my wife had some problems with her left eye and we're dealing with that now. But it has taken me away from my computer (and photography) for awhile.

For the time being, I am taking a friend's suggestion and using Flickr as the lowest-cost way to share my photographs. Since everyone I know has an Internet connection, this will give them a way to peruse the photos at their own time and pace.

All I have to is learn how to use Flickr...

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

A small wide-screen LCD TV set, let's say around 20" or 24", that allows a thumb drive of JPG files to be plugged into it. My Sharp 32" and Samsung 52" both do this. I'm sure many others do too but make sure before you buy one. Cheapo off-brands may not. The TV will be about $125-175 depending on brand and size (get a discontinued last year's model on sale!), the thumb drive will be about $10, and that's it.

Digital photo frames are overpriced for what they are. I"m not paying $80-90 for a lame little foggy low-resolution screen with wood around it that does nothing else!

Look at the specifications of the maximum quality pixel rate of the TV you get and create JPGs that are that same size in pixels so you have full screen maximum resolution files on your thumb drive. Don't use extremely large files in hopes of increasing quality (it won't) or you'll bog down your slideshow speed. The TV should play them as a slide show with no other software required - check that it does before buying too.

The new thin LCD TVs don't weigh but a couple pounds and can be carried in their decorative retail cardboard box that may even have a handle on it. I bought a 32" for the bedroom three years ago and carried it out to the parking lot and into the house with one hand on the plastic handle of the box and that was before the latest generation of super thin even lighter models came out. Another advantage is that you can use it for a TV when you're not impressing low-tech friends with your awesome photography!
