Another Tragedy
http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=25874087&nid=148&title=2-bodies-found-along-southern-utah-hiking-trailMy wife in late June wanted to know if I would like to go camping. She brought out some areas that I would like to photograph. Now I point out that one of us if nearly seventy and the other is much younger. I have been called a dirty old man, and I was in a custom made suit, white crisp shirt and silk tie at the time. Go figure!
Any way a warning for us all whether we go to the desert or the high mountains. In nature there is danger. JR
Know what you mean about 'dirty old man'
I'm 71 and the wife will be 50 in December. I try to let her keep up with me.
You can go anywhere you like keeping in mind your limitations. I had a quadruple bypass just over 10 years ago so if I feel a little tired out dining, drinking and dancing, I take a break before I get broken.
Live life my friend and smile until you wake up and instead of the ceiling, you see roots.

Wow! 2 people found dead in Utah. While sad it's no big deal, on average 1 homeless person is found dead in NYC everyday. That's 365 bodies a year in just one city.

RLK, both are sad. In the case of NYC, I am not trying to down play the plight of the homeless. It's tragic and somewhat preventable.
But you would need to site some statistics to substantiate that your words are indeed a cause for alarm.
At least some of the homeless live that life by choice, but most find themselves there by circumstances. Though tragic, there is a lot of tragedy in our society. We as a society are not able/willing to enact the ounce of prevention, so we deal instead with the pound of cure. But awareness is the first step. Happy shooting. SS
Sad to hear of loss of life.
Nature is unforgiving and cruel. The unprepared will succumb to the ravages of nature.
Stationed in Alaska we were ordered to carry survival gear in our civilian vehicles as well as surplus water, food, chains for tires, and a weapon. A simple flat tire at -30 degrees can be lethal. Advise well heeded. More than once did we rely on cold weather training and the emergency gear we stowed.
Sometimes events happen that we are not prepared for and the consequences are more than we bargain for.

I am reasonably confident it is a "big deal" to those left behind. The parents, loved ones, children, friends and relatives.
The murder rate in Chicago and Detroit dwarf any accidental loss of life and each and every victim leaves a trail of loved ones.
Sad to hear you consider loss of life "No Big Deal".

Our National Parks see over 100 fatalities every year. We don't usually think of going on a vacation as a life-threatening activity, but many people would be better off staying at work than going on vacation. (And no, I never was a boss. :D)

Jerry right on. I have seen some incidents in parks that border on lunacy, Upon traveling through Yellowstone Park we encountered a "Bear Jam" Black bear cub, playing, wonderful sight. Some moron in a blue Plymouth wagon wanted photos of his kid feeding a baby bear ( maybe 60-70 pounds) a banana. he cub would have none of it.
The cub complained, and HERE COMES MAMA, wads of planet flying in the air, the kid hauled butt back to the wagon. Had mama been 30 yards closer the kid would have been "Purina Bear Chow". Mama huffed and huffed and swatted the dirt, She comforted the cub as the human element retreated back to their cars as fast as reasonable not to further aggravate the Sow.
People never cease to amaze me.

I would love to know how much we, the tax payers of New York pay to feed, cloth, and house the homeless.
shelters, food banks, charities of every description, both tax sponsored and funded by independent sources.
Point being, there is no need for any homeless person to suffer a hang nail, much less die.
Some stats offer that New Yorkers pay a MILLION dollars a day to care for homeless.
Perhaps another method would yield better results.
JOB training and some accountability.
A hand UP. not a hand out.
With the resources this state has it could easily be done
BTW 2012 414 people in NY were murdered, where is the outrage?

334 in Philadelphia and 551 in Los Angeles, both places where I lived in the past.
Doesn't make it any easier for the families of the hikers though.

Yes, you are covering your face in shame.
