Hope you're not getting bored with my SX50 posts. Learning but still struggling. The hawks are not the spectacular beauties so many have posted here, but here they are. It was very far away in a very high old dead tree. I think I zoomed in all the way. I really hate those nasty Japanese beetles-they eat everything in site, but they do have pretty coloring. There were 2 of these gigantic ones.Must be the egg layers. I should have squashed them instead of shooting them :-)

I've been impressed with the SX50 images posted and am wondering whether all of your images were at full zoom or just the hawk? If not all, do you recall the approx. focal length of the others?

That beetle has wonderful detail!

Very nice! I especially like the beetle shot. The manual for the SX50 leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. I have found some parts of it must be copied from an older version of the camera, does not fit mine the way it is described. Did you use the zoom for the beetle? I have found that it works very well for closeups from 8-10 feet away.

Thank you! Yes, I usually do zoom on close ups, it seems to focus faster and with back problems I don't like scrunching down, etc. and I don't care to get my face too close to bugs! I have taken hundreds of shots in the couple of weeks since I got it and couldn't tell you what focal length I used. I just zoom till I like it and don't pay any attn. to what it says. I can't figure out how to enter the new camera into Lightroom so can't get the exif. on shots.

Thanks Jimande. I agree about the manual. I have read and re-read and still don't know what I'm doing. It does have a great zoom. I've been impressed with some more distant shots but it has it's limits. I haven't figured out the built in 2x tele yet.

Thank you Doddy. I kind of think that might be a female ready to lay eggs. There was another one circling around above it and they were talking to each other. Wish I could figure out birds in flight. So jealous of those who've posted such fabulous beauties!

Love the photos! The hawk reminds me of children that think they are hidden. The beetle is sensational!

Can you re-post a hawk and an insect photo and click the box to right where says "store original?" Hopefully we can then download and see your data. Some views will show the focal length of the lens itself (such as 4 at the widest, or 215 at the most telephoto) and others, like Picasa, will include the 35 mm equivalent (24mm, 1200mm).

As for the in-camera teleconverter: you need to be on P or aperture priority, shutter priority etc. Then you go to menu to the "digital zoom" choice. Select 1.5x or 2x. Mine is always on 1.5x because 2x is too hard to manage hand-held.

I think I can get the data by opening it in another program. I'll give it a try. I'm not brave enough to let you look up close and see my mistakes! Gonna have to get a lot better for that!
