An interview with plessner

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have always had a camera in my hand since I was in high school, got more serious about it when I went digital.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no training---took a class from a friend back in the 80's when I got my first "good" camera. One thing she taught us was to only show people the good ones and they will think you are a great photographer--that got expensive in the film days! I enjoy landscape and scenery photos, things around the farm, and of course the grandkids.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I was trying to think of something I could use for the contest this week and walked by my potted plants in the backyard and decided to use a shot of that.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I have a Sony SLT A65--no special set up

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I think I would have bought a digital camera sooner

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am happy with what I am doing now--I am a farmers wife and we raise corn and soybeans. I love the farm life. I am also a crafter and I do about 10 shows a year, plus my passion besides photography is landscaping and flower gardening. I have the freedom to be an artist, a photographer, and a farmer all in one day!

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
So far I have nothing out there---need to have my daughter help me get something set up--maybe this winter.

Thanks to all who voted, this is an honor and very exciting

An interview with scruffyherbert

Hi, very pleased to have had some success in the weekly challenge. A complete surprise. I've answered the questions below for you:

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been taking an active interest in photography for 2-3 years now. Before that I was just a general happy snapper who's photos managed to be always slanted or of people with missing heads and feet, that type of shot. I got a decent Fuji compact and started messing about with settings and realised that there was a lot more the camera is capable of. Taking a few macros of flowers is what initially started the photography bug.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I've had absolutely no training at all. I've basically taught myself through books, websites and forums such as UH. I haven't yet decided on a definitive area of photography that interests me most but I bought a macro lens so have been venturing into the world of the miniature. I love certain forms of graffiti but the macro bug (no pun intended) is the thing at the minute. I just love the fact photography has re-opened my eyes to the every day world around me and use that as a basis for photos. I have learnt to always have my camera with me.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I took this winning shot while at a railway station near where I live. It's amazing what you see when you look up above. Personally I liked the colours and the uniformity but the clock was to help with the rule of thirds. I thought although symmetry was the main aspect, the clock added a little extra dimension.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
The only equipment I used was my trusty Fuji HS10. I'm on a seriously tight budget so need to maximise my camera fully before I even entertain advancing or buying extra equipment. I believe the equipment is only as good as the person using it. I see it as an extra challenge to try and get good shots from a good but not bank account breaking camera.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
In the bottom left there are a couple of chimneys. I would try to take it from a slightly different angle so they weren't in the shot. Apart from that I wouldn't change anything.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I couldn't do photography then maybe making usable things from what's available for "free" from nature. Picture frames, framed mirrors from driftwood. That type of thing. I suppose I'm a bit of an Eco/hippy type................that and being skint
most of the time.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
The only place I have any other photos is on viewbug.com. I use the same user name if anyone is interested. I'd like to set up my own site for my photos but I still feel I need a bigger portfolio.

Thanks, Nick

An interview with planepics

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I probably started using plastic cameras (110s and 135s? - with flash cubes or towers) when i was in grade school. Eventually, I bought a Canon AE-1 Program and extra lenses that I still use (occasionally) and I bought my current camera on Black Friday 2009. I don't recall why I became interested in photography, as such.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
In high school, I vaguely remember taking a photography course that included darkroom work. This fall, I might take a 3-credit-hour digital photography course at my local junior college. I know they offer some kind of Associate's degree in Art, but I probably wouldn't ever take it that far. Other than the one course about 30 yrs ago, I have no formal training.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I've had a lifelong fascination with aviation. Any reasonable chance I can get to go to a big airshow (or even a small one, for that matter), I'll go to. I'd love to get to Reno for the air races and Albuquerque for the balloon fest at some point in the future.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used my A330 handheld with the kit 75-300 lens (which I recently replaced with the Tamron 70-300.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
The Blue Angels did all the work. All I did was keep my finger on the shutter button.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I'm not sure. I'd like to get back into flying if it wasn't so expensive. I have a private pilot license, but I haven't flown in years.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have 5 or 6 pics on my Facebook page, and of course, here on the hog. Two of my previous posts are also published in e-publications, I guess you would call them. I got Picture of the week on AvWeb, a daily aviation newsletter for 9/29/11 (http://www.avweb.com/avwebflash/potw/PictureOfTheWeek_205483-1.html) and Picture of the Month on EAA.org which became the June 2012 wallpaper calender (www.eaa.org/wallpaper). The archive shot doesn't have the calender on it, though, but I met the pilot at a later airshow at my local airport and got him to autograph a hard copy of the pic (which I now have on my wall). I was proud when he said he had downloaded the pic himself for his computer. Both pics were shot at the same airshow, Oshkosh 2011. My avatar was shot as Scott AFB last year during the show. I went on a photo tour in Haines, AK about 3 wks ago with TGanner and he said he was going to use the pic I took of him for his e-mail signature.

An interview with wISOr

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
My best friend got me started and I purchased a Mamiya Sekor 1000DTL SLR many many years ago, but I have only about a year into the realm of DLSR.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training and am on a continuous learning curve with my D7000. I LOVE wildlife photography and prefer that over anything else.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
Just purchased a Nikon 12-24mm and thought the tower was a good subject to check for distortion and clarity.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
D7000, 12-24mm F/G, ISO 400, 1/500s @ F/11

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I do not think so, the wires are not a distraction, and besides, they are there and belong there.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
Not sure, I'm too old to be switching gears to another hobby now.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I do not have a site for posting pics but surely will post more in forums that interest me on the Hog. It IS a great place to learn and show off what I think might be an occasional good shot.
