Fraudulent DHL Notices

I use DHL all the time for shipments around the world and I recently got an email that used the DHL letterhead and logo and had all the proper markings of a DHL notice but did not give any tracking number. Before I opened the email (which has a zipped attachment and needs to be physically opened), I contacted DHL customer service and requested clarification for this strange notice. I was informed that someone had hacked their database and was using their customer lists to send out viral attachments that can seriously damage your computer system.

If you receive any DHL email notice that does not contain a tracking number, DO NOT OPEN THE EMAIL AND DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY.

Since I use DHL constantly, their address is in my contcts list but this particular email had a stranger sender address but was addressed to me by name. As I said, any email from a carier that does not refer to a particular tracking number is probably a fraud and may contain virus or trojan that can infect your machine.

I posted this notice to warn other members of this threat.

UPS has a similar issue where the email says you have a package that couldn't be delivered and asks that you open a file to print a label to take to the UPS store. When you open the link you load the virus or trojan and then you have a mess.

I saw that one too, but I use DHL constantly so this one caught my eye and it came into my inbox instead of going directly to the SPAM box.

Unfortunately the scammers after your info have a chance of getting thru to legitimate individuals and businesses...thankfully you are smart enough to recognize whats going on and warn others.

What I cant understand is people falling for the most ridiculous scams..."the FBI has issued a warrant for your arrest"..."3 million waiting for you to claim" and the list goes on and on...

The thing that bothers me is that some folks must fall for them...or these most obvious scams would prove worthless after a while...but they dont seem to.

I had received a DHL notice of delivery but I never ordered anything. Knowing it was a hoax, I sent it to my spam folder.

DHL has suggested that this fraudulent email be deleted as soon as possible in case of timed auto opening. I'm just submitting what the DHL security personnel told me so others won't be infected.

Yes, I always delete all spam and read messages before closing my e-mail program. Then I run my AV program to clear cookies and hopefully anything might have come thru. Thanks for the nfo. I thought I was the only one to recieve such e-mail. Now, if only I could get the FBI to stop trying to give me money.

After deleting the message I then immediately go to the deleted folder and delete it from there as well.

You forgot about all those millions waiting at the airport with the courier. Obama is also giving away free money if you just give your account and routing numbers too.

Nothing in life is free except maybe death, and the government wants to charge for that now too. LOL.

It's very kind of you to pass this info along to us, singleviking. That's one of the benefits of a forum like ours, as long as people are thoughtful enough to share their experiences.

Danilo,
I was smart enough to see through the scam and contacted DHL Security. This was quite elaborate since they stole DHL's customer lists and used their letterhead and only a slightly altered origin IP address. I'm sure there are others who may have gotten snagged in this scam. DHL still hasn't gotten back to me to say what kind of worm or trojan was embedded but they did send me an acknowledgement email and a thank you and they have notified the FBI Internet Fraud unit.

I also received the UPS letter. Since we were expecting a package from our daughter, I called UPS and was told that it was a scam.

I have been informed that as a precaution against such scam notices, if they contain a tracking number, you should write it down and DO NOT USE THE LINK SUPPLIED IN THE NOTIFICATION. Then, go to the legitimate shipper's tracking site and enter the tracking number. This procedure avoids opening the scam email and possible infection by this virus.

The shipper will then inform you if this number is legitimate or a fraud.
Sounds good to me, and I use private shipping all the time.
