The low angle lighting on this bird is great. Bring up the exposure about 1/2 stop, increase the contrast, clarity and vibrance a tad and they will look much nicer!

thanks for the info i will try it this area is always in shadow when the herons come to roost so its a struggle to get good light ,jimmy

Light is always a concern. I often pass up opportunities because the light is wrong. Direct, mid day sun can be the worst. Early and or late, as in your example, can be beautiful. Hazy, overcast days can be good, also, but you still must be aware of the direction of the sun. Sometimes you only get a few minutes to work but the result can be magical.
Very nice shots jamm. I like the last one best as it looks like its been blowdrying it feathers.
