My wife and I are planning to visit the UK (England, Scotland, Wales) and Ireland from August 8th to the 25th. What type of clothing should we bring ? Do we need coats or umbrellas ? We live in the American South, so we usually wear shorts and t-shirts all summer.
Thanks in advance. We are looking forward to seeing your countries.

Before my first trip to Ireland I asked my father about the weather there. He told me it was hot, windy, cold, calm, warm, cloudy, rainy and sunny.
All in the same day, everyday!
Have a great trip KW, take lots of photos.
I am looking forward to going to Scotland & England in the fall. :-)
Remember the Scottish Highlands, and having to wear the tweed sportcoat in August. After a few weeks, got used to the weather, and then came the short-sleeves.

Hi, we are off for a week's holiday to Scotland to-morrow. We are going to the east coast not far from St.Andrews. Usually August is pleasant but as said before things change quickly from day to day. Long trousers, light jumpers, light coats along with your tees and shorts would suffice. If going on the west coast of Scotland be prepared for the midges !!! Little flying insects with a nasty bite. Plenty of repellent required. Our countryside is green and beautiful and I am sure you will have a super time whatever the weather, take plenty of photographs :D
The summer has arrived in northern Ireland ! The past few days have been warm and sunny with temp. in mid 20s it is 10.30 am - its 18 d grees and rising with a lovely soft breeze . People are running about in T shirts/shorts topless (men) at the moment but it is prudent to be prepared and carry a light jacket . As I live near the Mourne mountains there is a saying among the locals that if you can see them (mountains) it is going to rain & if you can't see them it IS raining ! Hope you enjoy your trip and give us a shout in 'the North'
Hi KW Conch
I agree with Gargleblaster. Our weather is notoriously unpredictable. In August you could get anything from cold grey drizzle to thunderstorms/downpours to heatwaves and droughts. Be prepared for everything (snow is unlikely) and carry lightweight waterproof tops and trousers. To get an idea of temperatures, check the UK weather forecasts such as BBC Weather and also the link given by Gargleblaster.
Have a splendid holiday and don't forget the insect repellent which you can buy in this country!

PS Don't forget we drive on the correct side of the road, i.e. the left! That is so that if we meet anyone coming the other way, we can draw our swords in our right hands to defend ourselves.

As I am replying, it is sunny and around 26C here this is about as warm as it gets here in the UK sometimes slightly warmer. But could quite easily be only about 15C. Certainly bring some waterproof outer wear because it normally rains at least once a week.
There is no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate clothing I wear shorts throughout much of the year over here but then I am used to it.
Hope you enjoy your stay whatever the weather. Don't forget to ask us UK HOGS for any hidden gems in the areas you are planning on visiting.

Thanks for the laugh! :-D
Thank you to all who responded to my request about wearing apparel for our August trip to the UK and Ireland.
It appears that we should pack rain gear, jackets, long pants and insect repellant ! :D
Fortunately, we will be traveling with a tour group and I will not have to worry about driving on the correct(?) side of the road. Hopefully, the bus driver will do the driving and have his sword at the ready in case we encounter any unsavory characters.
Looking forward to seeing this beautiful part of the world. We have have visited London back in the 1980's, but have not seen the rest of the British Isles and Ireland.
Thanks again to all who gave input.

A proof that in the old days - there was a problem with 'road rage'.
