Flash with 7D??

I have noticed that the 7D has rear curtain (2nd curtain) abilities. However, my flash is a manual one (Yongnuo), and my flash trigger is a cheap one (cowboy studios). I tried setting up the 2nd curtain with the trigger attached, and the flash on a stand with umbrella. It wouldn't allow me to set it up. Is this due to the fact that my trigger is a cheaper one, or that my flash is not TTL?? Does this work with better triggers (Vello, Pocket Wizard), or is it just for the flash mounted to the hotshoe??

Thanks All.

Cheap triggers usually don't allow you to synchronize at the top setting even in normal first-curtain mode. They would certainly not be a good choice in second-curtain mode. There may be other issues as well.

Can you use rear-curtain sync with the flash mounted directly on your camera?

I don’t normally shoot with a flash. When I do I only shoot using one that is ttl compatible. I use a 270EX or one of my 430EX II speedlites made by Canon. These are normally mounted to the hot shoe. On very rare occasions I use a cheap trigger, a CT-04 but cannot remember who made them.

Because everything is E-TTL compatible I have never had a problem! I would say that is where your problem is. I would never buy a flash or trigger that is not TTL compatible. The few dollars you save is not worth the problems you will have.

Canon cameras always send the flash firing signal to the flash on the first curtain. With a compatible flash, the shutter duration is also sent to the flash so it knows how long to delay the flash. With a manual, non-compatible flash, there is no communication of the shutter speed hence no ability to use rear curtain synch.

The use of a radio trigger of any type would not help.
