4th of July Traditions

I'm curious what traditions for Independence Day might be out there amongst my fellow UHHers.

We all light fireworks, bar-b-que, maybe swim or just hang out with friends and family.

But what are some of the more unique traditions you may have?

For example, with my group of friends, we spend the morning picking a location on our city to clean, usually a park. It educates us all on different parts of the city and helps us take pride in our community.

Oh and later, we have a beer tasting competition to see who brought the best craft beer. 8-)

How about you?

53 years ago I went to a small town 4th of July dance looking for girls. I found one. It was love at first sight or perhaps lust at first sight on my part. Anyway we were married the next June both 18. We always celebrate the day we met. - Dave

I normally get with friends for a huge drunken cookout. Since it'll be raining here all day we will for go the cookout and just get drunk. We also had to tone down the fireworks since they are illegal in the city limits. There was also the incident of burning down a neighbors storage building with a stray bottle rocket a few years ago. How were we to know the directional control system was made in North Korea? We will be proudly displaying the American flag by driving through the Latino sections with multiple flags waving in the breeze and the Star Spangle Banner blasting away on the sound system. Hopefully the window decal of Calvin pissing on the flag of Mexico will not be too offensive. After a day of heavy drinking we may fire up a joint and bow towards Washington D.C. to "honor" our current President. I think he is celebrating Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan) a bit early. It normally falls on August 8. At least with all the rain today it'll be harder for the Liberals to burn the American flag. Have a great 4th.

Thank you for your support. It's not just a job it's an adventure. Seriously I can go overboard with the cynicism and humor (a matter of opinion) but what the hell. George Carlin and Sam Kinison were not for everybody.

My how times have changed. Now the liberals want the government to control our lives and the conservatives want independence from a tyrannical government. You out did yourself in stupidity this time Rix.

Here we read the Declaration Of Independence, and discuss what it means to us, have a nice dinner, say prayers for our military and former military, the hero's that fought and died for our nation and have a cookout, then drive to the beach and watch fireworks.
My family has done so for as long as I remember, my daughters family does so, and God willing the grand kids will continue the tradition

A tyrannical government? No so my friend, it is the liberals that are fighting for basic rights of the people to vote, assemble and practice a religion of their choice. It is the conservatives that are restricting voting rights and requiring that certain religious beliefs are inflicted on others.

I can understand why you would think they way you do. The great point is that you won't live forever and the future belongs to others who eschew the dogma of the past.

May you have a splendid holiday as you wallow in your self-pity.

I'm sure that the British felt the same way you do regarding those that would move away from the old towards the new. It is all a matter of perspective. They fought to keep the status quo and keep what they deemed as theirs, theirs.

This country has been in transition since its inception. As the country grew physically and as the population has become increasingly educated we as a society have come to realize our potential to achieve the words set down and signed on July 4, 1776. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.

It's folks who think as you do that are holding us back by perpetuating the ignorance of previous generations. You are truly a piece of work and you don't even realize it. Taureans are by nature stubborn and slow to accept change but you, have risen that to an art form.
