I just had to re install OSX on a work Mac Pro, so once this was done, I re installed with upgraded CS6 and Light room 4.4

Before I re installed Photoshop and Lightroom, the Mac preview would preview and show thumbmails and full images of Canon CR2 raw files.

Now i have updated to Newer version of both LR and PS, the mac can't preview the raw files in Finder.

I know the previous install DID preview CR2 files as the old installation is on a different HDD, so i can still boot in tot he old install.
I had to re install the operating system due to other issues (constant Sys Prefs crashes).
But now with the new same version of OSx 10.6.8 and newer PS and LR, with updated Camera Raw plug-in..I can't Preview RAW files in Finder?

Bizarre..anyone got any idea

There were updates concerning iPhoto and pic files on OSX 10.8.-- in the past few months. You could start there, you may need to re-install the updates. My 2 cents.

Ah yes, but as I hinted at in my first post..not using 10.8

I did install it, but they (Apple) have made such a mess of Address book , Notes and Mail with this new 'iCloud ' iOS ified mobile look alike OS that I ahve gone back to 10.6.8.

I have managed to find the issue......over 15 hours I have been here working on this f**&&*ing machine...

Although Software Update says the Mac is up to date...it is not, there are later version of Camera Raw that can be downloaded..has to be done manually as Software Update won't do it. This is not an Adobe update..it is a iPhoto/Aperture update..but the auto update does not find it.

I used to think Windows was a pain in the arse, but Mac is not better grrrrrr

I use Mac but not Canon, so I can't say for sure. I believe what you have to do is associate that file with Preview. In essence tell the operating system you want to view the raw file in Preview. I'm at work on an HP so I can't try it now. I have Macs at home. I believe all you have to do is right click on one of the raw files, under info tell it to open with preview.

Yes, you can do that but it is not giving the usual icon sized preview..strangely ..just showing the "black and green writing exec " icon normally associated with executables..

downloaded an 8.1 CR update for adobe ..but it turns out to be a 'time limited release candiate..so got to now find the final release.bugger

Oh sorry..not making a very good job of posting the correct info this time am I !!

I had a crashing instal of 10.6.8, been randomly crashing for months now and no amount of searches or plist deletions fixed it.

So I upgraded to 10.8.4. Well I did two or three different installs of it on to spare zeroed out HDD's trying various ways to import my old Mail / contacts info etc..Setup Assistant, migration Asistant, clean install and manual moving of data etc.

Finally got it so I was happy with the install, but the hideous new 'Contact's plus other little annoyances sent me back to 10.6.8
So started with 10.6.8, tried 10.8.4 and then went back to a clean install of 10.6.8.

Took me from 0530 till 2200 last night to get all apps running again, re installed, updated etc.

Just finishing off this morning with an Aperture 3.2.4 update..the latest that 10.6.8 accepts, and then see if I can install later Camera RAW update for Aperture/iPhoto. Latest I could do before was 3.14..which is good for the Canon MkIII, but no use for the little XZ-2

Sorry you're having trouble with 10.8. I installed it one week after it hit the market and have never had a problem. It has features I don't care for, so I simply trash them. It's a highly customizable OS. You must have gotten a bad download.

Not a bad download, and no problems with it..jsut that I don't like it.

the old style addres book gone, replaced with that 'Contacts'

I found out how to return the Mail app to 'Classic' look but there did nto seem to be anyway to get the old Contacts layout.

Notes too, is a mess, a new separate Notes app,. Only seem to be able to sync via iCloud..

From the sounds of it, the problem of not being able to see the preview wasn't with Apple, but with Adobe. Somewhere along the line, you must have dumped some of the files/folders that included the latest Adobe updates. Apple's Software Update only checks for Apple software. I've got 10.7 and 10.8 installed on my desktop in separate partitions and 10.6.8 and 10.8 on my laptop, also in separate partitions. Most of my time is in 10.7 and 10.6.8, but sooner or later, I'll be pushed all the way over into 10.8 or whatever follows it. I'm with you in not liking some of the features, and I keep 10.6.8 on my laptop to allow me to continue running some old software that I don't want to spend money upgrading.

No, not Adobe, definitely Apple.

It was the Apple preview that was the problem in Finder.

It was to do with the iPhoto/Aperture/OSX Updates that the problem was. There is a Apple Camera Raw update/download for iPhoto/Aperture that is totally independent of Adobe

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3825

Despite having Aperture 3 and iPhoto 11 installed, the updater was not finding and updating the Apple Digital Camera Raw updates.

After I found the Apple KB article I linked to above, and found and installed the 3.14 update manually, Finder preview came back, without having to have any Adobe products installed.

For some reason my previous installation had updated to a compatible Apple Camera raw version. but a clean instal of 10.6.8 did not promt the software to d/load the update.

It does not support the Olympus .orf format of the XZ-2 and that is nto going to be possible. The Apple Camera raw update that does support the XZ-2 is not compatible with 10.6.8
