scratch disk full

what in the world is this scratch disk full garbage on cs6 and how do I fix it? it comes up when I was trying to make a new brush stamp. I defragged 3 times and shut it of and started the whole computer back up but the message still appears. Do I need to add some ram?

Scratch disk Full, usually refers to one of two problems.
1. The hard drive where your operating system is installed is "Full". full does not mean that there is no space on the Hard drive, it means that there is insufficient space for swap files, usually work on around 10% minimum of your hard drive space is needed for swap files.
2. Insufficient memory, or something is using up your memory.
The first one is easy to check, simply look at the available space on your hard drive.
The second one is a little more difficult, you will need to check memory usage, easy with windows based system (Not sure about Mac, but I don't think you get this message with a Mac). Then you can download a utility to check your memory usage, try download.com
Hope this helps you sort out your problem.

if you are like me you might have filled up your hard drive with picture files,
external hard drive is what I need to do don't know if this will help you or not

If you have had crashes while using PS or PSE then the temp file(s) that PS and PSE creates doesn't close properly and remains on your HD. Do that a couple of times and you fill your hard drive. Solution....delete the orphaned temp files.
When I'm running PS with a number of photos loaded my PS temp file is often times larger than 25GB.

The best scratch disk is a separate disk on which Photoshop is NOT installed. It is a place PS uses to store temporary stuff and having it on separate disk does speed things up.
Any disk works best when it is not too full. I have seen different percentages, but it seems most advice is to keep a disk less than 80-85% full.

I'm going to take a wild guess here. If Windows still uses "virtual RAM" which is a part of your HDD reserved for RAM overflow, you may have to increase the size of that disk space.

Exactly. Memory allocation and scratch disk allocation are done in the Performance preferences section.

The following web site can help with your question better than I can explain it. Hope it helps you. Having said that what Captain says is spot on. I only heard about scratch disks for the first time 3 days ago and have not yet actually done anything about it. It's my next priority.
