Canon now or Canon later?

I have been using the Canon 7D (which I love) for about a year as an avid and active non-professional photographer. All of my lenses are Canon’s - 2 are "L"s - with only a macro 60mm that is an EF-S. I need your input/views on this question – Do I purchase a 5D Mark III now, or do I wait possibly 6 months for the upgraded 7D Mark II? I know the general differences between full frame and cropped, and, also, the potential differences between costs of each. I am most interested in your specific thoughts and opinions.

Keep in mind that EF-S lens is not compatible with the 5D, so unless you plan to keep the 7D it will not be of any use to you.

The 7D II will have a sensor that surpasses the 5DIII and based on what I've read in the rumor analysis, will be even more focused as Canon's pro-grade camera based on the cropped sensor. If you need the next new thing, wait for it. Overall, I love my own 7D, but when compared to still newer sensors in lower level entry-level cameras, I can see how much more noise is being controlled in ISO levels 3200 and higher.

Yup, NJ, I certainly understand that EF-S is not compatible - I would probably look for a 100mm macro to replace that.

Noise versus ISO is something I have thought about and I am leaning in your direction as far as waiting. This is the kind of feedback I am looking for - we'll see what other people say.

Thanks!

Dugole, I would be more in tune to whether you need the high speed of the 7d. If so, you would not be happy with a 5lll. If you just happen to own a 7d by default, get the lll. Unless the new surprise body of July is the new 7dll, you may be in for a long wait, and that is not counting the sticker shock. Tech is not cheap.
The scenario, 4 years ago, I was shooting with a 20d. The new 5dll came out. I found it on loyalty and bought it. A year later, all the 5dl shooters wanted the Mkll but were saying, "if I wait for 6 mos. I can get the updated mklll". They wouldn't get the 5ll cause it was too much money, they'd rather pay the extra for the lll. Well, the lll came out, it was $1000 more than the ll. that's the price of tech. Well, they wouldn't pay for a ll, let alone pony-up for the lll.
I'm saying the 7ll will be worth the wait if your willing to pay the $1000 extra.
My guess is, the July surprise is the 1dX with a semi-crop to fill the hole left by the 1dmklV. Keep your fingers crossed for the 7dll. SS

From what I've read at various Canon rumor sites, the July announcement will be for a 70D and that a 7D Mk II will be early 2014. You make a good point about innovation and the cost of innovation. I've been offered a used 5D Mk II but it was unquestionably a "no" when I see the tech differences between that and a Mk III. Ryther Camera is offering a 5D Mk III for under $2400 and that's about the max I expect for the 7D Mk II, maybe a bit less. I'm hoping for Digic 5 processors (or Digic 6?), upgrades in their 19 point focus, HDR, better high ISO noise control and quite a few somewhat lesser improvements. I am more than happy with my 7D so I can deal with the wait.

Thanks for your input!

Got an announcement from B&H this morning, the 70D is on pre order. From the announcement, it appears to go a few steps further than my 5D II, albeit with a crop sensor.

Now back to my original post - Canon 5D MK III now or wait 6 months(+/-) for the Canon 7D MK II - your opinions.

I have a 5D MK 11, great for landscape, portraits, would not sell it. I love my 7D for birds, but will definitely update to the 7D MK11 when it's available, . . & I can't wait!

My opinion...since you already have the 7D (it's a great camera..I love mine) why wait to get another crop sensor. I would go with the 5D and carry both on a serious photo outing.

Hi Anglo Rod - Thanks for your reply - I am seriously leaning towards the 7D II - although Ryther's price on 5D MK III of under $2400 (£1580?) is certainly tempting.
