On a recent trip, my new Nikon L820 gave me a shot with 11.5 MP. This translates to a lot of DPI. I've always thought that this quality of a shot was only possible with the high end DSLR's. Any thoughts on this ?

Did you mean to say 11.5 mb as a file size? The L820 is 16mp camera, equivalent to many DSLR's. Shooting in jpeg, your image file sizes will vary according to the nature of the subject and how compression is applied. The difference between the L820 and a DSLR of equivalent mp is in the sensor size and thus pixel size. The pixels on a smaller sensor are smaller and thus not as light receptive as those in a larger format. When you enlarge the image from the smaller sensor, the smaller pixels have to spread out more than those on a larger sensor. That said, some of the new point and shoot cameras with small sensors produce very good images!
