I was looking for an external flash for my SX50, and came across the Yongnu N560-II. The price seemed right and the write-ups were great, but I think It may be overkill for me. I really wanted something that I could set on "auto" and shoot. Does anyone have experience with this unit. I have no idea what M S1 S2, or MULTI, means, and the manual doesn't help much.

This one works perfectly with my two Canon DSLRs, the Canon G10 and the Canon SX30 IS. TTL. $60

Oops! Keep it for the other applications. Extra light on hair, backgounds, etc...But I don't even know if it can be triggered by the on-camera flash. Maybe you'll need a Yongnuo radio trigger (S3)?

If you want a auto mode that would be E-TTL and the YN560II does not have it. It has Manual, several slave modes and Multi which is a rarely used stroboscopic mode. With Manual mode you must select how much power the flash puts out. The amount of power you need is determined by several factors such as your camera's ISO setting, aperture opening and distance to the subject. Once you determine these settings you can calculate the power needed and set it on the flash. After taking a shot you must look at your results for over or under exposure and adjust ISO, aperture, distance or flash power to suit. If you are posing a subject in a studio or outdoors this is not a problem especially if you have a good flash meter and lots of time. If you are firing from the hip you will be best served with E-TTL which looks at all the settings and does all the figuring for you. E-TTL is available on the YN565 and YN568 models

Thank you all for your help. It seems that this is going back to Amazon and I'll get one that uses TTL. Should have asked before I shot the gun. You guy's are just great.

Update:
Just looked at the prices for the YN565 and YN568, think I might have to wait for Craig's List to cough up a few dollars for me.

The Targus model pictured in a comment above works nicely with the SX40/SX50 cameras, and is available at Target for $60. Walmart usually has a Sunpack Digiflash 3000 for $60 that also works nicely. The model you got would work very nicely for a manual Slave for a secondary off-camera flash!

I use the YN560 on my SX50 & my Nikon DSLRs. Works well. It is manual, but very easy to set up. Heaps of power, but can be throttled right back if required. I have two & have never had a problem with them.

Can be triggered by any other flash, including built in flash. No radio trigger is required. :D

Thanks DOOK I just mite have to look into these flash's...the YN560. I'll have to see if they have that small stand where you can actually set the thing on the ground.

I bought a Nissin Di622 Mk2 Flash Gun a while ago; £114.99 from PremierInk & Photographic in UK. (You should find it for less in the US. VERY happy with it as it supports off-camera use, being triggered by the on-camera pop-up flash or you can also use wireless (radio frequency Transmitters. The head has Bounce & swivel facilities. Also it had PC Sync socket - so you can link via cable if desired. Have just ordered another one the same for off-camera use
