Well, it's been like that for a long time. And both parties will gladly work together to keep third parties from gaining any serious political momentum.
Just a cursory reading of history shows that controllers of countries have one thing in common. They are few in number and rich in monetary terms. And money rules. It matters not what kind of govt. it is-theocratic, fascist, communist. Democratic govts. in all periods of history have always been short lived. It is that way because the elite(monied group) can bargain, buy, steal, start wars, etc. in order to get what they want-control over the lives of all the citizens. How can they do that? Because most people can be bought, can be cajoled, can be lied to. When people have to worry about eating, or being invaded, or jobs, then it is relatively easy to get them thinking the way the elite want them to think. Wars have always been waged for either resources or space, or both. And religion has been used to justify it.
We don't want to believe that just a small percentage of people can dictate life to vast majority. But it has always been that way and will be that way until/unless we wake up to that fact of life. We can live in our little worlds of sports, movies, drugs, etc. and ignore the truth, or we can wake up and understand that we are the masters of our fate. We are many, they are few. What we want, we can have-if we stop fighting amongst ourselves and start helping each other understand the truth. jmo

" If there is one thing we learn from history, it is that we do not learn from history." - I forget who said this

You are quoting the "Golden Rule" - they who have the Gold, make the rules.
