Between the two: Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro USM. or 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM..... And why?

The non L is a brilliant lens with great optics.
The images are so sharp.
It is a smaller, lighter cheaper lens with just as good or better images.
It is not weathersealed.

If you need weathersealed get the L.
If you do not need weathersealed then the non L is brilliant too.

I use the non L in light drizzle, nothing has happened to it yet.

If you've got lots of money to burn, go for the "L". I have the non L 100 macro and am very pleased. Check out my Flickr page for examples of macro with the non L lens. Good luck!

Like lighthouse I have the non L also. It is a really sharp lens. When shooting macro I usually use a tripod so the lack of IS on the non L lens is not an issue for me but I can see where it could be an advantage that some would want. If using for other than macro, maybe portraits, and handheld the IS would be nice but I have other lens in the 100mm range with IS. TNmike

The L is weather sealed and has a superb IS. The glass may be a little better

Susan, I am very impressed indeed. Your photography skills are brilliant, your processing skills are very good, nice and subtle, and to spice it up with 3 sex images intermingled there really makes a great flickr homepage.
Thank you for reminding me to not judge what I think peoples photography is going to be like from their avatar icon thingy.

Your photos are incredible. It proves knowing how to use the equipment trumps not knowing & spending a bank roll & getting mediocre photos.

Thanks, lighthouse. My avitar looks like a dumb blonde? Ha, ha. I have lots of sex images - I feel like a voyeur.

No.
Not a dumb blonde. But if you can get advantage out of playing that sometime, then why not use it? LOL

Image Stability. Twice as many images were good compared to the non IS version. I had the non IS and now I have the IS version.

Great photos. I kept going back to the bicycles scene at the Dock St. Coffee Shop, love that one.

Wow, CCG. I bow down to your greatness! What a beautiful portfolio - and even the sex photos! But I thought leprechauns didn't exist - but there one is in your photos! People were just looking in the wrong country! Does he make his own clothes or does his mother?
