For all subject types of photography, in your opinion, what are the best "new" (not used or refurbished) lenses Nikon makes that sell for under $1000.00 ?

If you can spring an extra $50 it would be the 28-300. Certainly offers the most versatility. ;)

That's a very easy question to answer, but first we have to know how much you expect from your lenses. If you want to blow up prints to large sizes and examine them with a magnifying glass, $1,000 probably won't do it. If you're taking pictures to post online and email to friends, any Nikon lens will probably satisfy you. "All" covers a lot of territory. If you mean low light and fast action, you'll need expensive lenses, f/2.8 or better. Nikon's co-called kit lenses can all give you good images under normal conditions.

I would buy a brand new camera or lens only as a last resort. My first choice is Nikon factory refurb, then eBay.

I have a few different lenses but my walk around favorite is the 18*200. Does a fine job.

while not all nikon lens , for my D3100 I carry 3 lens, 50mm nikon, 18-270mm Tamron, 70-300mm Tamron and a Sigma 2x teleconverter for the 70-300mm, for those special times I bring along the Big Sig 150-500mm ( which the TC also fits ) and the tripod.
All lens except the big sig were 500.00 or less

I am selling my 28-300 on Amazon for $949.
It does the trick! Really, it is not heavy and can be just the one lens you take with you all day.
It am going to get a heavy, fast lens to catch sports.

I hate to mention the dreaded Ken Rockwell but here's a link.

He has a lot of info on Nikon Lenses. I've bought lenses on his advise. Yes, Hogs, I have!
We need more information to give you advise. What do you do with your camera? What do you want to do with it? Are you just talking about a good all around lens... prime or zoom? Do you have any lenses? etc.
