For one, the EF-S 10-22 mm super-wide angle.

This is a magic / great lens. I have had one for a long time and would never part with it.

The lenses already listed are all great. I'll toss in the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM at the next tier down as a great IS performer that gives the 300mm reach at a modest investment for good to great results.

I'll second that.

Hum, what a loaded question! What camera body are you using? Is it a crop sensor or a full frame? One more question, why a non "L" lens? Depending on what you plan on shooting there are many "L" lenses that can be bought used that might be better choices. You can find them on Adorama or B&H web sites. You might want to look at the 24-105mm lens also. If you look it can be found for $700.00 to $750.00 right now.

Keep in mind that "L" lenses hold their value much better and can be used on any DSLR body.

Fully agree with the above lenses. I'll add Canon's 90/2.8 TS-E tilt-shift lens. One of the sharpest lenses available. Great for product photography and close-ups (e.g., shooting flowers). Gets more than 0.5X magnification (better magnification than Canon's 50mm macro!)...not cheap though.

How could I have forgotten TS-E lenses???!!! Yes... I Totally agree! Canon TS-E lenses are among the best. I have an very unhealthy desire for the TS-E 17mm. I know... it's an "L"... but I couldn't help myself.

For any subject type of photography, in your opinion, what are the best "non-L" lenses that Canon makes?

   Canon's EF 40 mm " pancake" lens is incredibly versatile, and folks think you've lost your lens. Isn't it odd that the words "lens" and " mind" both consist of four letters, the "n"is silent, and can be interchanged?

Canon's EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens definitely has to be on that list.
