I have used a point and shoot all my life, but I came across a deal I couldn't pass up to get a DSLR camera, Canon 30D. I know it's an older camera but it was FREE! So I bought a lens and have been trying to figure it out. Truthfully, I like to take pictures but it's not my passion, yet. Hopefully, I'll figure this whole complicated thing out and it will become another one of my passions. I'm looking forward to learning some of what I don't know, which is mostly NOTHING here. I really want to be able to take pictures of birds, my plants ( I am an avid gardener) and pictures of my family and dog.

The 30D was Canon's midrange model back in the day ... and that day is only as far back as 2006. You can download the manual in PDF from usa.canon.com, just search 30D and dig into the brochures and manuals. Check the firmware and see if it's the latest at 1.0.6. Have fun and welcome! The DPP and EOS utility software will help you move files off the camera and edit. Just dial in your PC OS and download the current version available for that configuration. They're reasonably powerful tools and free for use with a Canon EOS.

Welcome, Neighbor. I used to live in Fletcher. You'll find plenty of tarheels here. Good start with the shot of the falls. Where is that? I will pm you with info on a super club that will probably have a region somewhere near you. You can learn a lot from them. Good luck!

That is Slickrock Falls, over in the Cashiers/Highlands area. Another photographer friend who is trying to help me get started took me over there a couple of weeks ago and we photographed Whitewater, Dry Falls, Callasuja Falls and a couple others I cannot recall the names of off the top of my head.

Welcome Mel!! I hope it is Mel.:):) Pretty nice first post for not knowing what your doing.:):) You have a big learning curve ahead of you. Once you get the camera under control you will have to get the computer too. You can tweak your pictures in post and really make them great. But what ever you do with the camera or the computer.... make it fun and keep smiling at all your goof ups. It will all fall in place.

Nice shot.... I like it because it has people in it, and this gives it the substance needed to tell a story... and storytelling is what photography is all about, to me. Welcome!
