How did you get close enough to him/her? Even with the space hubble telescope I can never get a shot of these teals. Nice pictures.

scurveedog,

I was on a boardwalk and they did not spook.

The Teal on the log was shot at 200mm and the swimmer was shot at 400mm.

This is one of the reasons I like the 100-400 L, I can move in and out as need.

Thanks for your flattering comment,

Tom

oldmalky,

The unique composition of the flowers, water and the Teals really caught my eye.

Thank you for comments.

Nice job!

Next time, lay down on the boardwalk (if possible) to get an eye level view. You'd be surprised at how much that can improve a photo like this!

Thank you

I believe that I do remember that you suggested to someone sometime ago to get down on a level with the bird to eliminate the shadow ( or mirror effect ).

Getting down on or near the same plane as the bird will also really change the perspective of the shot.

I'll keep that in mind birdpix.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, my suggestion about getting low is not to get rid of the reflection but to change the background. When you shoot from above, the background is the water/flowers and they are close enough that they are within the DOF and relatively sharp. The duck doesn't stand out against the background. When you get low, the background is farther back, perhaps even the far shore which is very out of focus and isolates the subject more.

I should do a special post about that with some examples.

If you do post some examples, I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
