So excited, everyone! Tomorrow, I will be shooting my FIRST photoshoot (other than my daughter and animals) in my photo studio in our spare room. I'm no professional but my husband built me a backdrop and I have some props set up and am just super excited. He's not a "new" newborn.... So I know it will be more of a challenge but I am totally ready. Can't wait to share with you all.

Good luck Victoria, hope it goes well. Try to get baby fed at your place so they're nice and sleepy afterwards.

Or, use the old babysitter's trick of giving the baby a little beer. :D (Kidding, of course)

Just so you know for the future, I watched a tutorial on photographing newborns and the 'tog used audio cds bought on amazon of white noise and "womb music" It really kept the babies relaxed, I found myself nodding off too! They really settled even though they were being moved around and posed a lot. She also took most of the shots with a wide open aperture and the results were fantastic. Also she used a beanbag to nest the babies in with a soft blanket draped over it and various blanket/ knitted fabrics on top of that. The soft blanket simply attached to the low backdrop frame behind and worked really well. Hope some of these ideas might be of some use to you, happy shooting..

I just did one of does shoots.
One old trick is to turn up the heat in the room, so baby is comfy.

One of the results. "Little Bambino Toes Surrounded By Love":

I too am a home based newborn photog. Yeah have fun. It's a real challenge to have them sleep during the shoot to capture those special shots. Remember nothing is more important than the safety of the child. Don't attempt a shot when the baby should be asleep & is awake. Too much can go wrong. It's never worth their safety just for the shot.

So no partial asphyxiation then? Joking aside there is an aussie woman who commands a vast fee and has people beating their way to her studio, her name escapes me but she did a fantastic tutorial on creative live, it's about $100 but I would say worth it.

Good advice. But promise me you will NEVER again use the term "tog." ;-)

Sorry captain c it was just because I had used the term "photographing" beforehand and was trying not to be repetitive.

Not a big deal - I ONLY hear it from the newbies who think they are professionals. Almost as bad as bok..., bo..bu...boke. Sorry, I just can't say it. :-)
