I enjoy messing around with shutter and aperture settings to get special effects. Wondering how many of you do it too and if you have any tips.
This was taken in bight daylight, but the shutter was set at 2000 and the aperture at 5.6. Used a flash and a camera mode that enhances color. The speed created the black background and the flash bounced with the reflection off the lily creating the green pad. I get black backgounds behind Hummingbirds this way too.
High speed shutter with flash
Neat. What camera were you using?
For this, I use a neat little point and shoot made by Panasonic. DMC FZ100. It has many very useful features including HD movie and slow motion.
#2 is by and far the best Bird picture I've seen yet....

I would have to second that.
Love your number 2 shot, great job!
#2 certainly blows any of my hummers out of the air as it were. That is a great shot.

Yep, you got that hummer perfectly. Since it's doubtful you can improve on that color shot, here's your next challenge : do it in black and white. Color always pleases the human eye, so B+W is more difficult because you don't have the color crutch. One way to accent is to use a yellow, or better yet, a red filter. Your hummer or whatever will stand out because the background (sky) will deepen to black, making the subject really pop out at the viewer. You might try shooting maybe 5 shots, each a shade different in f-stop or exposure time to get the optimum exposure.
There's nothing to add to the comments about the hummingbird -- great shot!
I appreciate the information about how you are "playing".

Are you suggesting to set the menu in a digital camera to take B & W?
If you dont mind me saying so....birdie has a thread going with birds and she would absolutely love to see that hummer as most people would . There will be a lot of lookers there. You can tell her I sent you....HA!
