I'm trying to get into the photojornalist world and wonder how can I get or work on getting a legit press pass

you will need the backing of a firm, really hard to freelance in that world.

Start with your local papers - including the free rags they give away at the 7-11. Send them photos, ask to speak to an editor and see what their policy is on freelancers. Most small papers will be happy to look at your stuff - they won't pay much but every time you get published it can improve your chances later on.
