Here is the setup:
On the way to Branson Missouri for our little holiday, my wife and I kept noticing these pretty orange flowers here and there. Since we were traveling 75mph and these flowers were off in the distance, we could not tell what they were.
A couple of days later, we found out that they were wild, orange Milkweed. We thought these would make a nice addition to our butterfly garden.
On the way back from our little trip my wife decides to stop at Kmart and buy a small hand shovel. I thought this was o.k. since we have had a lot of rain and Branson just got 9 inches of rain the previous week. The ground should be soft.
We pull off the road behind a billboard and I started to dig. The shovel bent in half the first time I put it into the ground. It was hot out and I scraped as best as I could and pulled a couple out of the ground and put them in a baggie with some moist dirt in it.
I don't think they are going to make it. They look pretty sickly.

I am not sure about that.
They look even worse now.
Some plants go into shock after being moved and come back fine the next year. Hopefully, that's the case for you.

I think that these are annuals. These are not anywhere close to developing seed pods.
The botanist in Hot Springs for the Forestry Service has identified these flowers as Butterfly milkweed. The locals from around here call the plant Chigger weed for some reason.

Yep. This also what the sign said at the fish hatchery where we first saw them.
