An interview with CHG_CANON

My first response -> impossible ... Wow, what an interesting message on a Saturday morning. Here's an attempt at some answers for the interview questions.
Thanks. Paul Sager

1. How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I received a Canon T50 35mm film camera as a high school graduation gift from my parents now 30-years ago. I grew up with periodic slide shows of my father's pictures going back to his own HS days through 4 years in the Navy, marriage and college, and then my own and my sister's birthdays and growing up.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training. I practice a lot in the sense I shoot a lot and pay attention to the technical aspects of what I'm doing, what is the camera doing and what are the results being generated. I now receive several weekly newsletters and tips / hints emails. I tend to shoot close up or tightly cropped but I don't know yet if I have an artist statement that defines my own 'kind of photography'.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
This picture is a prime example of practice. I was walking the Boston Freedom Trail with my girlfriend taking pictures of what we found. We started here at Boston's Memorial Day flag display at the Boston Common where I captured several different angles. 20,000 flags is quite a sight and makes you stop and think and remember.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
This picture was captured using a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM mounted to a Canon XTi (EOS Rebel 400D). I use Aperture Priority and RAW in about 99% of all situations. I manually set my focus points and here I worked with the depth of field placing the focus in the middle of the field of flags to achieve the out of focus in both the foreground and background using aperture f/5, 1/2000, 220mm, ISO 400.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
My post processing skills have improved since this picture was taken. The content is wonderful, but I've calibrated my monitor since it was created and I might adjust the colors if I pulled it up in edit mode again.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
As film fell out of style, my interest in photography waned as well. I'm not sure when it started, by there's a 5 or 6 year gap in my photography in the early 2000s. Things resumed when I got that XTi in 2006. This question seems to be looking for other forms of artist expression, but my energies are expressed in endurance sports and computer programming when I'm not working with a camera. I'm an aspiring chef as well and my artistry in food is probably stronger than photography.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not yet ... Most of my stuff is for my own personal enjoyment. My friends and family can see several large and varied albums on Facebook. The discussions of websites and photography as a business here on UHH have me looking into the ideas. But, I don't yet have the time and confidence to pull together a more public portfolio. The attaboy votes on this picture might just be the confidence boost I need.

An interview with debsic

First I would like to thank everyone that voted on my photo. I appreciate all who took an interest.

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have had an interest for many years, but have been inspired with the purchase of a new camera this past February.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most? I have had no formal education in photography and I enjoy photographing all that nature has to offer, and my grandchildren.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot? The fox pup was my inspiration.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? I used a Nikon D3200 with a 200mm lens. There was no setup other than being in the right place at the right time.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again? The only thing I would change is getting a 400mm lens.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do? If I couldn't do photography I would continue to work on stained glass.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work? I will post more of my photo's on UHH. Thank you so much for the wonderful Forum and again a Thank You to the Voters.
