Hi,

My daughter just got the Canon T3i and she wants to take pictures of the moon this weekend, but doesn't know how to set up the camera, so the question is:

What would be the best settings to use on the camera
A-S-P or automatic? Speed and f stop.

Thank you in advance for your help and suggestions.

I used to shoot with the T2i, used s/s 1/500, f-stop 8, ISO 400 and set the white balance to sunny.

I have the Canon T3i and shoot the moon with a Tamron 70-300mm lens. I find the best settings for me are Manual mode, Shutter 100, Aperture between 8-11 and ISO 100. Auto focus seems to work just fine-focusing on the edge of the moon. Have her use a tripod for the sharpest shot. After shot processing- I just crop and increase the contrast. Good luck :-)

All of them will work. But M is the best.

A camera club in Canada posted these tips:

I remind you that when you are photographing the moon, you are really photographing reflected sunlight and therefore you need to manually set your camera with daytime settings.
If you don't, the moon will simply appear as bright disc when you photograph it. If you want to record the surface detail of the moon, you will need to remember the "sunny 16" rule.
This rule tells us that on a bright, sunny day, we can achieve a correct exposure by setting the camera to f16 and the shutter speed to the inverse of the ISO setting. So at an ISO
setting of 200, the following combinations should give you correct exposures for the moon.

f 5.6 - 1/1600s
f 8 -1/800s
f11 - 1/400s
f 16 - 1/200s
f 22 - 1/100s

1.- She will need a tripod. Disable Image Stabilizer - Page 38
2.- Use the lens with the longest focal lens.
3.- Use M focus - Page 87
4.- Use Single Focus Point - Page 85
5.- Use the camera self-timer to avoid camera shake - Page 89
6.- Try different long exposures - Page 99, Page 64-68
(use slow shutter speeds >15 seconds)
7.- Use high ISO settings <1000 - Page 79
8.- No Flash (it will be useless)
9.- Use the View Finder instead of the LCD Live View - Page 179
10.- Shoot in both RAW and JPEG format - Page 76
