I watched a podcast last night on how to shoot the moon. They showed pics of what you really want to capture and then what you probably get...mine are the probably. Anyway, they said that you need a minimum of 300 mm lens. The longest I have is 200 mm. Is it possible to get a good shot with just a 200 mm? Thanks.

If you really want to get a more close up picture, I would suggest you try contacting a local camera store and ask if they will rent lenses. They even let you try one out for for a day with small deposit.

The only camera store we had closed years ago. But if you want fast food or need fuel for your vehicle, we've got you covered.

Use the 200mm and crop a bit.

Thank you Jerry. I'm going to give it a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained...right?

I did a test the other day, shooting at 200 and then 300, and I certainly wouldn't want to spend thousands to get 100mm closer.

I couldn't spend thousands on a lens even if I wanted to being on a fixed budget. Too bad I didn't get interested in photography BEFORE I retired. But I have learned that often when someone says "you can't, or you need" that there is usually a workaround that will be satisfactory for myself (thanks to the many people on this site that know and are kind enough to share their expertise.)

I believe the difference between a great lens and a good lens would require an enlargement and a magnifying glass to determine. Although I could be wrong.

BN, the last time I slapped a burger on my camera, had to send the camera in for a cleaning, didn't think to use gas on it. Thanks for the tip!!

You can take a decent photo of the moon with a 200mm lens.
