hi everyone
just bought the Nikon 5100 and would like to ask about
a decent walkabout lense for my camera.
regards ron moore
I have both the Nikon 18-200 mm lens and a Tamron 18-270 lens. Both perform very satisfactory on my D5100 and D7000 for anything from closeups of insects through city strolls to scenery and flying birds. Vibration compensation is just fair at best for both lenses, both focus fast enough to nail flying birds if you track them reasonably closely, both are sharper than your ability to hand hold the camera still at anything less than 1/1500 seconds, both are a bit stiff in places through the telephoto range. Both lenses weigh the same. The Tamron is a little bigger than the Nikon, the Nikon seems a tiny bit better in low light to me. The Tamron has three obvious advantages: 1) a better review in dpreview, 2) a six year factory warranty and 3) it's quite a bit cheaper, Amazon price of $449 vs $668. There are frequent rebates and sales promotions for both. I think you'd be happy with either one.
While I own the Nikon 18-200 and can speak to its excellent performance, the concept that wings42 speaks to is right on target. These wide range zooms have their deficiencies but overall perform quite admirably.
Lately I have been leaning toward Sigmas for my D7000. The 18-250 Macro has been welded to my camera for a great deal of the general walk around photography I do. Very affordable and relatively lightweight.

I like the 24-85 AFS. It is small, light, focuses like lightning and it is sharp throughout the range. If you don't need the big zoom range it is worth a thought. There is a newer model with VR that is getting good reviews. There is also an f2.8 model that has a reputation of not being very sharp.

I like my Sigma 18-250mm.
Living in the city, for my walk-around I generally use a Nikon 50mm lens. It's compact and light enough to move about in crowded streets, freely jump on and off trolleys and buses, and won't attract too much attention with the muggers.
Although I sometimes do miss having the zoom option, overall I get better photos because I feel more at ease with the 50mm at my side and I'm more likely to explore different perspectives than I would with a zoom lens.
hi everyone
thank you all for your help, very much appreciated

Most of it depends on what you are shooting and your budget. I prefer either the Nikon 35mm or the Sigma 10-20mm
hi dal
just ordered the Nikon 35mm G lense, I had the 50mm lense on my canon which was really sharp, so I am hoping
that this 35mm will be as good

I have a Nikon D5100 with 18-300mm lens. I photograph nature, beaches, mountain hike views and people. I need the zoom. It all depends on what you like to photograph. This lens was somewhat expensive for me, but worth it. It is good enough quality I won't need to upgrade in the future.
