Back button focusing is very useful when recomposing and when shooting with a full time manual focus lens. Using it or not really depends upon what you are trying to accomplish. Its ability to separate the metering function from the auto focus function gives the photographer greater control over the results. Most, but certainly not all advanced amateurs and professionals tend to use it at least part of the time.

Not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting he should just try it to determine the default value? In the default on the 60D, the AF-On will focus the lens, but when he half depresses the shutter it will refocus. If his goal is to have back button focusing and have the shutter only control the metering, he'll have to change the feature as shown in the video link from above.

I have a 60d and wouldn't dream of using anything BUT the auto focus back button. It is magnificent. Just focus up then frame it up...perfect. ESPECIALLY, for sports and active kids :)

I agree 100%. Have a 60d and use the back focus exclusively. It's perfect.
