Hey Tom Bold Jumper

Here's a couple of Bold Jumpers using the paper towel diffuser. See if this makes a difference. These are tough to expose properly. I'm not liking the store bought diffuser as it would fail taking these shots, the paper towel just works.

The fodiox is not working for me, still to harsh for subjects like this. Several of the shots today were too hot due to the overhead sun, I just blocked the sun with my body and this helped out
Look close and you can see sun spots in his eyes, notice how hot his Green metallica chelicerae are

I like the whole set but 3 and 4 are worthy of a book.

The last one (4th image) may be my most favorite ever. (I've been missing your jumper shots lately. Glad to find them again.) Thanks for pointing out the sun spots. I got these a couple of days ago and was wondering where the extra light was "leaking" in. I tend to get out after lunch and early afternoon and the sun is awful. I think you mentioned before that you use one paper towel. Is that just one ply of paper towel or a 2-ply sheet? Love your posts!

I've been working crazy hours, missing my jumpers and macro also. It's a quality paper towel so I would assume 2 ply, last for months. You can cover with clear plastic also if you like and it doesn't affect the flash

Here is an enlargement of your spider's eyes. Based on the reflection of your softbox face, I believe that your speedlight is not properly aligned to your softbox, causing uneven illumination. With my fotodiox diffuser, I do not observe the same symptoms you are experiencing. On my Nikon SB-600 speedlight, I set the illumination coverage to widest, and use the built-in drop-down plastic diffuser. My illumination is consistent center to all corners of my fotodiox diffuser face.

Note uneven illumination in fotodiox reflection

No, This is from my DIY diffuser. Been like this from day one, blue tape inside is causing the blue cast to the bottom 1/3 when I angle the soft box.
Tom is having a problem photographing these Bold Jumpers using the Fotodiox soft box because it allows to much light thru and does not soften the light enough. These are example with my DIY showing it can handle difficult subjects/white on black/ without blowing out the white or under exposing the black. Even under Harsh conditions/ as example shows/Bold Jumper in noon direct sunlight the DIY works

Now you've gone and done it... everyone will be wanting to add blue tape inside their diffusers to get that pretty blue shade to the eyes. (Well... maybe not everyone.) Colored contacts for jumpers! :)

Martin: Have you tried sticking a layer of paper towel inside the fodiox? That's what I'm currently trying.

Unfortunately can't show anything

(Can't download as my computer won't recognize the raw files. I suspect this happened after downloading GIMP. Tried removing it. Nada.)

Anyway, try the extra layer....

I'm back to using the DIY softbox and just by chance it already has a paper towel. When I get time I will fiddle with it, like the shape and weight of the fodioux

If your softbox is the 6"x8", each of the sheets on Bounty's "select-a-size" paper towel sheet is 6" wide and fits easily across the front/outside of the softbox. I just used double-sided tape and taped only the right and left sides... didn't have to tape top or bottom. Perfect fit.

So that means you did not post an example using the fotodiox softbox.

I still beleive that you need to pre-diffuse the light inside the softbox.
