NOT A KYLEMORE ABBEY PHOTO!!! I NEED HELP!

While using one of my 2 my Canon 50Ds in England last week, my camera quit on me, and I got an "ER-1" message that the camera and 24-105L lens had lost contact with each other. I immediately removed the lens and cleaned the gold contacts on both body and lens with isopropyl alcohol. That didn't work. Later that afternoon, when I tried again, the camera took two great photos, and then gave me the same error message and quit working. Since coming home, I've tried the camera/lens combo several times with no error message. Have any of you ever encountered this? If so, short of sending them both back to Canon, were you able to fix the problem? If so, how? I'm so frustrated!

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Yes, it happened to me last year. I paid for a half day photo tour in Paris, took 2 pictures and got the same message on my mkII,5d. The instructer took me to a cafe so we could clean the contacts on the lens and that didn't work. It would take pictures sporadically, but I ended up sending the lens in to Canon for repair.

I should have mentioned, same lens.

That is probably a stuck aperture/ broken ribbon cable problem. It costs around $300.00 for Canon to fix. That recently happened to my older 24-105mm.

Here is more info on the issue:

I was hoping for Kylemore Abby!
Not sure why I would have thought that.

I have had that, twice, with my Canon 17-85IS lens. It was the lens, not the body, and the second time they replaced the whold focussing mechanism.

Thanks, but where's the blue rowboat they have for the foreground? It was overcast when we went to Irelend for our honeymoon. Beautiful place!

It is a beautiful place but so many times we have had nothing but rain - and when it rains it doesn't mess about!!

A few years ago we spent 17 ( drunken ) nights in Connemara over the Christmas/New Year period - it rained incessantly and we had two power cuts but one of the best holidays we ever had. Had to console myself by sitting in the local bar looking out the window and supping Guinness lol!!!

Rathyatra, you should move to LA, it rarely rains there except in the movies.
And if you are so inclined, you can still drink for 17 nights, but at least your Guinness would be cold !!!
