Norton Programs have a really bad reputation from way back, but survive mainly from Vigorous Advertising and often by being on your Computer when purchased.

Agreed...Norton is a poor program and on top of that hogs memory to the point of slowing down even brand new machines.
Malware, spybot and trend micro are all good free programs that have gotten me out of a few jams...
Have you tried system restore?...go back 5 weeks or more...it will delete programs you have installed since then but will keep your files intact...just a thought.
