Shutter Speed

I'm finally catching on about my Nikon D7000 but-
I have trouble with understadning and setting the shutter speed. The instructions and even a book I bought seem to gloss over this, telling about F stops and its relation to shutter speed. Is there a way to set shutter speed independently, manually?
Thanks!

Not a Nikoner but does your camera have a "Tv" or similar choice somewhere on a dial? That stands for "Time Value", and is the camera's rather goofy way of saying "Select this to set shutter speed". If Nikons work like Canons, and I have no reason to suspect they don't, if you use Tv to set a shutter speed, the camera will select the other necessary settings to produce the best picture of your subject at the current time. This means the camera will set the Aperture, possibly the ISO, and who knows what else.

An "M" setting on your dial, for "MANUAL" means you want to set ALL the settings yourself - YOU set the Shutter Speed, YOU set the Aperture, YOU set the ISO, etc etc.

Are you wanting to set the SS and then have the camera select the correct F stop? If so you can use shutter speed priority (on my Canon it's TV on the program dail, unsure what Nikon uses).

If you are wanting to do it all manually, selected your SS first, then adjust your Aperture setting until your exposure meter tells you have correct a correct exposure setting.

Set your ISO to somewhere between 100-200... this is a nice setting for those just starting out learning about the exposure triangle.

On the D7K dial, it's "S"..sunofagun - that makes sense. Odd.

The A is aperture value, the M is manual, and the P is "Programmed". The D7K looks like a helluva camera for $1200.

I have a d7000 as well, shutter speeds are set with the thumb dial on the back right side. Just spin the dial to what shutter speed you need. It's best to be in Manual [M] or Shutter priority [S] to use this function. Look on the top left, the dial that has PASM on it. Just rotate it to what you need.

I did post this to another thread but I'm posting this here as well because this was such a frustrating thing for me to learn:

On a Nikon, the fractions are listed in whole numbers e.g. 125 which means 1/125th of a second.

When you get to shutter speeds 1 second or longer they appear like this; 20" (with the quote mark behind the number) This means the shutter speed is 20 seconds.
