Hmm, I have the Sigma 150-500 mm on a Nikon D7000 and I am not having any of the issues you mention.

Have you tried to fine tune the focus for the Sigma?

Thanks for the thought but, according to the link, fine tuning isn't available on D200. Shame!

The D70, D90 and D7000 will AF with a lens at max. aperture of F7.2. No issues with the big Sigma on them at all. The D100, D200, D80, D40, D50, D60, and D1 series all had their AF limited to F5.6, maybe some others too.

Many, many thanks.

The D200 auto focus is probably the issue here; it works to F5.6, whereas the Sigma lens at full extent is I think F6.3 so the D200 will not be able to autofocus.

Thanks for the post. The link takes you to the video and 2 links to download pdf or doc files but they take you to iCloud? Any suggestions appreciated.

The D200 AF sensor is limited to lenses that are F5.6 or smaller maximum aperture. The big Sigma goes to F6.3 maximum aperture at the longer focal lengths and this will cause the D200's AF system to not function. Pulling the zoom back gets the lens into its F5.6 range and it will AF again. Its all a matter of the amount of light reaching the AF sensor in the body, it needs a specific amount to be able to AF.

MT Shooter - you are like the gear guru of the forum - I learn every time you post. I have the Sigma 150 x 500 on my new D7100 (LOVE IT) and have NO problems. I never thought about the sensor limitations on the D200. Attached taken last night at 0 - dark thirty (1AM) with a Sigma 150 x 500 @ 300mm

I have no auto-focusing problems with my Sigma 150-500 on a Nikon D4 that I don't have with my Nikkor lenses. Autofocus is quick and accurate. When I have AF problems it's usually due to one of two problems: 1. The subject that is poorly defined, has funny patterns, etc. This is explained in the camera manual. 2. Operator error.

I haven't had any auto focusing issues using it (Sigma 150-500mm) with my D80 at 500mm. I have noticed that it focuses much faster on my D800e.

The D80 and the D200 share exactly the same sensor, but differences in processors may make for variances in AF systems. The D80 is listed by Nikon as one of the F5.6 limited bodies so I included it in my response. Glad yours is working well. That lens sure is great on the D800's!

I also have this lens and mine was recalled for a focus defect. Had to send it back 3 times for repair. Finally they got it right. I don't know if they still have a list of the serial # effected or not, but you might want to try and find out.

This may not help the Nikon user but it may help the Canon user. On my 500D (with battery pack) my big Sig 150-500 does not have a problem focusing at 500mm, even on birds in flight, the 500d was "tuned" to the big Sig by Sigma. However my 60D(with battery pack), does not always focus immediately at 500mm, but does after refocusing at a shorter focal length, the 60D did not to go Sigma with the big Sig. Hope this is of help.
