I have an NikonD7000 which is brand new as of January this year. I have seen firmware update notifications online and am reluctant to download to my camera as I have heard nothing but horror stories. What is the real truth?

I've heard nothing about "horror stories" in doing updates. I have previously installed the two updates (12/22/10 and 4/1/2011) with no problems. I have yet to install the new update (11/10/2011) and don't anticipate any problems there either.
What "horror stories" have you heard?

print out the update instructions and charge your camera battery before you start. Be very careful that you follow the instructions exactly. Basically you download the file, format the camera card and transfer the file from the computer to the card. Use the menu on the camera to upload the file to the camera. Under no condition turn the camera off until you know the firmware has been installed. Good luck

I have the same camera with same age. I have done firmware updates on a few Nikons. I have not done this D7000 upgrade as I see no advantage and no issues with the original firmware. The principle I adhere to, if it's not broke don't fix it! Not enough time to fix all my gadgets.

I am thinking about upgrading to the Nikon7000.Do you have any comments positive or negative and what would you recommend for lenses, wildlife zoom -every day-or specialty lenses.Any comments would be helpful.

Good advise... I have updated firmware before in this manner and have had no problems.

Be advised......On the D7000, the card must go into slot 1.
I don't recall, but the last time I did an update, I believe it read it automatically, didn't have to go to any menu.

If you are changing topic you really should start a new post...
That being said I have heard good things about the D7000. I personally would rather have a D700 but that's my taste. You could check "www.dpreview.com" to see what the Britt's say about the D7000, it seems to be a reliable site to me. I have a D300 and recently got the Nikon 16-85 f3.5-5.6G ED VR zoom and have been quite pleased with it. When I shot film I often used my 24mm f2.8 Nikkor and have missed how wide that was. 16mm on a smaller sensor is the equivalent of 24mm on full frame, so I have that wide angle back now. If you look at the reviews of the 16-85 you will find, like I did, that the distortion at 16mm on this lens is less than the other lenses at 18mm. It's not a fast lens but I primarily us it for landscapes and they don't move very fast, so I did not see the need to spend $1500.00 more to get a fast lens that's not as wide. I have also been quite pleased with my Nikon 70-300 f4.5-5.6G ED VR lens. I do have other lenses, some old some newer, but these two get the most use. I still use my 55mm f2.8 micro as well, but It's just hard to beat that lens as a micro, if you can stand that it's not auto focus (a non issue to me). Hope this helps you some.

D7000 is a great camera, you cannot go wrong if you need the complexity, if not buy the D5100. I buy only Nikon lenses, batteries, flash, ML 3. I like to shoot existing light and mostly use a http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5014af.htm it becomes 75mm on DX and is perfect for rock shows and candid event shots. I used to use an expensive http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/1735.htm on a D700, but did not like the bulk. I shot Pentax screw mount 50mm film for decades without a light meter and like simple things. I use the same Nikon 50mm on a now affordable film Nikon F5.

Owners who have installed updates testify that their cameras no longer function properly and that they must take them in to camera repair. I cannot give you detailed information as to the issues, since I did not ask. Thank you for your help.

I have nothing negative to say about the NikonD7000. I think it is wonderful. It has done everything that I asked it to do and well. Good luck

No, but just to note that Costco has a huge pile of them on what appears to be a pretty good sale price.

Hi,

The D5100 is a very complex machine also. You can operate it on auto, though, and get good pics most of the the time. The main advantage I saw in the D7000 (after I had my D5100) is that it has weather proofing that the lower models lack. The D5100 sensor is exactly the same as the D7000. The D3100 a little less sensor.

My daughter-in-law bought the D3100 the same time I bought my D5100 a few months ago. She liked it because it has an in-camera Guide that she has found very useful. She isn't into exploring the complexity like I am.

She takes better pictures than I do.

Regards,
Larry Leach

I recently upgraded the firmware on my D7000 without any problems. It is straighforward and easy, just follow the instructions provided and as others have indicated make sure you have a full charge. Once started (from your SD card in the camera) it needs to complete before the camera is turned off.
