I have a100-400 canon L lens and am not able to use my 1.4 extender on AF. I've read several times about taping pins to make it AF.Could someone please show me how this is done . Also is it harmful to the lens and or camera(canon 60d) Thanks pkfish

Here is a photo from Fred Miranda's showing the pins to tape. I would not recommend doing this as a permanent thing. Give it a try. And you probably will come to the same conclusion that I did, it is much easier to just manual focus. The auto focus is very slow when you have the pins taped.

The new firmware for the 5D MK III makes this unnecessary for me to tape the pins now.

It does no damage to the lens or body. I have done it and it does work but it is slow. Because of my bad eye it is worth using though.

A better option though is to use a Tamron 1.4X. It works using Af very well on a good day and no taping required.

Exactly ! IMHO the Tamron SP 1.4X is a much better option than the Canon in this situation ..... The Canon is OPTIMIZED for prime super teles .....

I use the 100-400 and 1.4 TC, I simply manual focus as I do not want any residue or foreign material on the lens.

Aw, come on. I am sure you have a spare eleven grand laying around. Just think about your hiding places for a minute. Maybe taped to the bottom of your dresser or under your mattress?

Anyone that buys a Canon converter must remember that all Canon converters are a dedicated converters, don’t use it on a lens that is not on their list or you may damage the lens! Sigma is the same way, use them only on recommended lenses. In other words, they will not work on all lenses including some of their own.

As I stated on an earlier post, I do tape my pins on a Canon converter, but only us it on a recommended lens to obtain AF. I will not use this TC on a lens that is not on their list because it may cause physical damage to the lens. You can find Canons list of recommended lenses here:

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/5/0300003485/01/extenderef14xii-en.pdf

or here:

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/3/0300004653/01/extender-ef-14x-iii-en.pdf

You can find Sigma’s list of recommended lenses here:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/teleconverter-compatibility

NOTE: Many third party TC’s, such as Tamron, will work on most lenses. I own and use the Tamron TC’s and have not found a lens yet that they do not physically fit on. This is why it is the manufacture I normally recommend.

Even though your lens may be on Canon's "list" as workable, keep in mind All current Canon AF TC's are OPTIMIZED for super-tele prime lenses of 300mm or greater - so if your lens is other than one of these, there are better options - ie Tamron SP !
