So after searching for the right one at the right price I came up with a solution: the Canon Power Shot SX50 HS.
So far it's working great. I'm starting a trip to the Grand Canyon as I'm typing this and I hope I'm fortunate to capture some awesome scenes with its 50x zoom. It's full HD quality is stunning when compared to my previous camera. It is easily stored and yet it still provides the power and quality I have been searching for.

Congratulations!! And hope to see some great results!
Practice as much as possible before you get to the point of the "once in a lifetime" scenes. It may take a little playing with settings, but the results can be fantastic!

Just got mine in April and love it! Going to Niagara for a 4 day shoot in August and looking forward to it. Been there many times as a tourist...now going as a photog. Good luck at Grand Canyon...hope you have a wonderful time!

Hi Marc,

I'm originally from Buffalo, NY and the falls is one of my favorite places. Please post any/all, especially if you go to the Canadian side. Can I purchase a few when you return?

Enjoy your trip! And welcome to the Canon SX50 users club. As you can see we all love our camera, and all have taken great pictures with it. I've taken a lot of videos with it, all at 1080 and they been fine. The image stabilization is so good, you can probably get away without taking a tripod. That should lighten your trip load. Post some pictures when you get back.

Go on eBay and order a spare battery or two. They last quite a while, but why get caught with a low or dead battery.

Great choice. I just purchased a Canon Rebel T5i to upgrade from my 4mp PowerShot G3. When I bought the G3 it was top of the line for a P&S and cost around $800 for the kit. You can get such a super camera these days for half that. I believe you made a good choice and will be very pleased. I still use the G3 some with great results. Good shooting to ya.
