Photoshop is fantastic, but sometimes it's overkill. I've been using Irfanview (free program) for years, and it keeps getting better. For quick touch-ups, removal of unwanted spots, color correction, it is fast and simple. There's nothing like PS for major work, but I can get most things done in Irfanview in the time it would take to get PS up and running.

Give Paint Shop Pro a try. Before I finally bit the bullet and bought it, I would alternate between demos of Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. I have a copy of PP 6 somewhere as well.

PS is certainly more powerful, but PSP is no slouch either. I've had no issues using PS filters in PSP. I've tried all the free offerings and they just didn't work for me.

Elements is very simple to use..I've been using it for 3 years..works very well. Also, your camera likely came with some basic editing software, so try that...I just purchased Lightroom3 and am learning that as we speak..
Before you buy anything, take a look on You Tube and do a search for the program you are interested in. You'll find many tutorials that may help you make the best decision.

I use Corel Paintshop Photo Pro X4 and Photomatix 4. Also used a trial version of of Adobe Lightroom 3 recently. I like Lightroom - couldn't justify the expense for redundancy capable with Paintshop.

If you just want to crop, resize, adjust color and contrast and edit of that nature; then stay away from Photoshop. I use Photoshop CS5, but that's because I use features that the freebies don't have. I also use Irfanview for viewing pics and for slideshow displays. My LightRoom is too cumbersum for this, even if they tout that ability.

Irfanview is free and upgraded regularly, can view raw, edits well and displays the best. My guess is that 90% of general photograhers would need nothing more. We have more sophisticated members here, but more than half would accomplish all their goals with Irfanview.

Of course that does not keep anyone from 'wanting'. We have 'needs' and we have 'wants'.

Have to agree---been using Picassa and it also includes another site called PicNic built right into it. Very simple to use (I learned) and to be honest with the amount of complaints I've seen on this site regarding PS and trying to learn how to use it I'm no longer even going to look into it. I just downloaded PAINT.NET the other day and it's much more involved then I care to get. If you want your photos to look like paintings or comic book pages then go for PS other than that the only reason I see anyone would even want it is if you shoot in RAW. For those who shoot in Raw it's like their darkroom of old. If you want simple and effective I definitely would recommend Picassa 3---check it out, if you want more dig deeper there's a million of them out there.................

Many people like photoshop elements 9. I think there is a version 10 coming out or is out. You can get it for around $80 to $100. Lightroom is also a choice that is more costly for about $200. Elements may do everything you need.

I'm new to digital photography and using a Nikon D-7000. I use a MacBook Pro and have a copy of Aperture II. Anyone out there using Aperture? What do you think about it? Any suggestions appreciated...
