Try the Micro Nikkor if it will focus to the range you need to compose a proper portrait. If you use the 50 shoot a bit loose and then crop in for your final image to prevent the distortion you would experience if you filled the frame with the 50 on a tight facial portrait. For the same distortion reason, both the 24 and 35 would not be good choices.

Use the 105 its a great portrait length lens. You wont look foolish. The 50 is ok but you have to be a lot closer to the subject to fill the frame more. The other lenses are more for portrait environment photos. The 105 will also render your backgrounds more out of focus making your subject stand out better.

It depends on the graduation and how close you can get. We use 35mm at six feet for two of our shots, the handshake and the ceremonial portrait. The handshake is 3/4 shot. For a close up at six feet we use 70mm. The close up is chest up. But, we are on the stage as the graduation is happening. We also use flash. Depending on how the graduation is setup you may get close enough to use your 105mm. Normally you will not get close enough to use the 50mm. This information is taking into account you want to photograph as the graduation is happening. Last nights settings with flash, ISO 400, 125 SS and F/14.

Just finished taking pics at sons graduation. The lighting was absolutely horrible. Either the light was to low or the action to fast. Believe it or not I managed to get the best pics with my movie camera and then clipped out the best pics. The poor lighting combined with the distance to subject made it almost impossible to get decent shots with the slr. I hope you keep this in mind. I'll never take pics any other way at places like this. Even the official photographer was very dissappointed with the lighting problem. And he was allowed to roam around to get his shots

There are some interesting comments about distortion when using a 50mm prime lens. I just bought a Sigma 50mm 1.4 and shot a few photos of a baby face pretty much filling the frame. I didn't get any distortion.

The 50 is a goo choice if you can be close enough. If it is a Large group at the Graduation, like a large College, You would want the 105MM. The wide angle to be used if there will be lots of group shots.

If those who use a people 50mm lens for portraits are happy doing so,then that is fine. After all, its all a matter of being happy with your outcome. It is like argueing about what is the correct exposure. For me ,I will stick with my 70-200,as that gives me the latitude to compose and get the "perspective"correct.

I've had some experience with portraits...this is good advice given...I second it! Longer focal lengths give more pleasing facial proportions. This is why you see people's noses look larger and out of proportion on close ups with many point and shoot cameras....that may be 35mm equivalent.

I did some shots of my Granddaughter's HS Grad last month with my Sony A57 and a Sonysal 18/250. Covered everything I needed with just what lighting was in the gym. Not a perfect deal but good enough to enhance with LR4.
